Had a small nail in my tire and identified a slow leak, thanks to the dashboard indicator. Contacted Rivian Service and asked them where a good place in the LA area was to have it repaired. Service advisor said that all the Discount Tire stores had received jacking pucks and were trained .in their usage. Contacted the closest one in Pasadena and they did not have them and declined to service. Contacted another Discount Tire and the manager said they had the Rivian pucks. I confirmed that they had the pucks verbally on arrival. The manager went so far to say “ we service Rivians all the time” . As I watch the tech start to jack up the front the manager walks over and says to the effect of “make sure you use the puck” at which time the tech says “I am”.
Whatever the puck was used, I’m guessing it’s not a Rivian puck. Nothing was removed. It was just lifted with the jack.
Minor damage at the jacking point. Should I be concerned or just pissed off?

You should be both. But you should also know that in California, the Discount Tire you see is likely NOT the same as the Discount Tire certified by Rivian... Those are America's Tire in CA...

First. We need to clarify exactly where you went. In that part of California I think the official Rivian partner is America's Tire and the Discount Tire and Service centers are a different company.

If it was indeed @Discount Tire then not acceptable, but you are not the first unfortunately.

Discount tire “balanced” my wheels at two different locations.

At the third (independent shop), he showed me how off balance each wheel was, even with the weights Discount Tire put on there.

As a 15 year customer with a ton of referrals there, I will no longer be doing business with Discount Tire.

I know those techs are under a lot of pressure to keep things moving but it still defies common sense to think you could just slide the jack under the vehicle and start lifting it against the panel without doing some kind of damage.

Very helpful, thanks. As luck would have it the location I went to is NOT on the Americas Tire website. Having only purchased tires from Costco in the recent past I am/was pretty clueless.

There were 3 open bays. Removed the tire, plugged and replaced without rebalancing so only took a few minutes for which I have no complaints.

We apologize for your recent experience. We would like to look further in to this to make sure you're taken care of. Hope you don't mind us sending a DM.

There was someone in the LA area that used a Discount Tire (warehouse) that was/is not associated with Discount Tire headquartered in Scottsdale, AZ and well represented here on the forums by an employee of Discount Tire.

This 'other' Discount Tire (apparently) is the exact same scenario expressed by another poster a few months back, all the way down to the we service Rivians all the time. OP provide the address of the facility you used, which will clear up any problems.

Every Rivian owner needs their own set of Jack Pucks, which can hopefully help avoid these problems. Yes, you should be upset with the service. As a Rivian owner I designed in Solid Works our own magnetic jack pucks (first magnetic design) and have delivered over 5000 to Rivian owners.

It boggles my mind that a tire facility will not at least google how to properly change or repair a tire on a Rivian...just state, we are experts.....I'm sorry you've faced this, as have others.

Ya this was America’s Tire in CA.

They used to be great; I noticed them kind of slipping up 2 vehicles ago when they didn’t properly mount the wheel onto the vehicle and I found jack pucks hanging from the bottom of the car…

Seems like you have to be on top of this stuff after they perform the job.

Based on OP's location and the Chinesium junk jack in the photo, I believe he was probably here:

  • Discount Tire & Service Centers
    Pasadena(5.7 miles)

1373 East Walnut Street, Pasadena, CA, 91106
    (626) 796-3000

Which is NOT the retailer we all know and love. Discount/America's tire uses high quality HD jacks.

There are several tire shops within a mile of each other with similar names. I go to none of them and stick with Island Tire, family owned place where I don't get the run around.

I had a screw yesterday too but plugged it myself.

Just a shout out to the Discount Tire in Lakeland, Florida. I recently took my R1T in for new wheels and tires. They did a great job and had clearly been trained on Rivians and followed all the procedures perfectly. I was concerned at first and watched them closely but after a while I went inside and sat down because it was evident they knew what they were doing. Oddly, the Lakeland shop is the only one in the Tampa area so they said they've seen quite a few Rivians.

a plugged tire requires rebalancing as you added weight even though small to the tire with the plug.

I wish the yellow ones were available on Amazon. All they had was red when I purchased a couple weeks ago.
