I took my first real road trip yesterday and was a bit nervous and confused after entering my destination at the start of a 230 mile journey I have done many times in my other vehicles. My max pack SOC was 87% with an estimated 359 mile range, but the navigation system was recommending I stop to charge or risk arriving with 14 miles of residual battery. Throughout the first half of the trip, there was about a 100 mile delta between my actual battery level and the remaining miles on the drive, but the estimated residual was still very low. At one point, it said I would have only 3 miles on arrival, even though I had 299 miles of charge and only 186 left to drive. I had the efficiency graph on my dash the whole time, I was typically around 2.2-2.5. As we got closer to the destination, my residual battery estimate finally began to climb. In the end, I arrived with 65 miles left.
Do others experience this? Does the vehicle "learn" and do a better job of estimating as it has more history? Does it factor in elevation of the destination? (We did gain about 3,000 feet). Any other things to consider? In theory, I should have arrived with 129 miles. Obviously I wasn't expecting that, but I also didn't understand where over 100 miles were disappearing to, especially given my driving style. Overall, very happy with the Rivian but the engineer in me wants to understand it better. Battling the same complaints as many of you (HVAC, wireless charger woes) but again I'm pretty impressed with the quality, features, and driving of the vehicle.
