that’s only for military personnel stationed in Washington?
Correct. If you move to WA, you only have 30 days and if you already live here then, obviously, you have to register it in WA when purchased.

FYI, you'll still have to pay taxes here unless you plan on leaving within 90 days...
WA State Licensing (DOL) Official Site: Vehicle and boat registration for military personnel stationed in Washington
Buying a vehicle while stationed in Washington
Sales and use tax
  • If you'll be in Washington for more than 90 days, you must pay Washington state sales or use tax, even if you register the vehicle in your home state. You won't need to pay taxes in your home state unless their tax rate is higher than Washington's.
...or take delivery outside of WA state. Road trip!
WAC 458-20-177 (4)
"Tax consequences of a vehicle sold to a nonresident and delivered out-of-state. A sale of a vehicle to a nonresident where the seller delivers the vehicle out-of-state is exempt from retail sales tax. "

That blurb on the state's website is WAC 458-20-177 (3)(a)(ii) and applies to those delivered in the state.

☝exactly my thoughts. Hoping metro Boston isn't too far behind the rest. 19 orders in MA, but only 2 are Launch Green R1Ts, so ?‍♂
I'm waiting for a Launch Green LE R1T and will happily accept delivery in Boston (or the factory) so make it 3.

According to LinkedIn, they're hiring in Boston for delivery specialists, etc, so... fingers crossed!
Please reach out to me when you get your date. Maybe we can stage a mini Rivian rally down Storrow.

Incorrect. "This rule applies to any sale of a vehicle to a consumer who is not a resident of the state, including nonresident military personnel temporarily stationed in Washington..."
https://app.leg.wa.gov/wac/default.aspx?cite=458-20-177

Read this about exemptions:
https://app.leg.wa.gov/RCW/default.aspx?cite=82.08.0264
But the non-resident

Read this about exemptions:

After reading the entirety of the RCW, I'm not sure these exemptions apply. The title of the RCW is
Exemptions—Sales of motor vehicles, trailers, or campers to nonresidents for use outside the state.

Additionally, the verbiage is such that it contradicts the FAQ on the DOL website.

but only if:
(a) The motor vehicles, trailers, or campers will be taken from the point of delivery in this state directly to a point outside this state under the authority of a vehicle trip permit issued by the department of licensing pursuant to RCW 46.16A.320, or any agency of another state that has authority to issue similar permits; or
(b) The motor vehicles, trailers, or campers will be registered and licensed immediately under the laws of the state of the buyer's residence, will not be used in this state more than three months, and will not be required to be registered and licensed under the laws of this state.

It looks like you need to look at
WAC 458-20-177:
"including nonresident military personnel temporarily stationed in Washington"

and has this example:

"(f) Buyer is a member of the armed forces and provides a copy of her orders showing that she is temporarily stationed in Washington. Before entering military service, buyer resided in another state. Buyer purchases a vehicle from Dealer and licenses it in her home state, but intends to keep the vehicle in this state for over three months. This sale does not qualify for any exemption or deduction. If the vehicle were to be removed from the state within three months, the sale would qualify for the RCW 82.08.0264 retail sales tax exemption but not for a B&O tax deduction."

Please keep in mind that I am not/was not a legal officer, but I highly recommend you get more clarification from your legal department, just to keep yourself safe...

Firstly, I'm not trying to avoid taxes. I love my very maintained roads in Kitsap and recognize where that money comes from... Though you really do need some clearance and AWD to drive around a lot of Seattle's terrible roads.

The DOL website absolutely contradicts itself and that's why I go directly to the WAC and RCWs. They use WAC 458-20-177 on their website, but only (3)(a)(ii). (4) speaks to purchasing vehicles outside the state, let's say Oregon, registering it elsewhere and keeping in WA. No sales tax there ?

slight update on their language.

When can I take delivery?
In the United States, deliveries of the R1T Launch Edition are expected to begin in June 2021, with deliveries of the R1S Launch Edition expected to begin in August 2021. In Canada, deliveries of the R1T and R1S Launch Edition are expected to begin in November 2021. All other configurations for both the United States and Canada will begin as early as January 2022.

We’ll reach out when it’s time to prepare for delivery based on your configuration, location and when you placed your preorder — this can’t be requested through Customer Service.

TLDR: wait for a guide to contact you.

FWIW, I asked CS about interstate (registering in FL, live in WA for me) registration and insurance:

"Rivian (and your dedicated Guide) will take care of the registration for you and in most cases, there are no tax or registration repercussions if you take delivery outside of where you register. You’d pay taxes and register in your home state, with the transaction simply happening somewhere else.

Rivian Insurance has partnered with some nationally known carriers like Nationwide who will be handling both underwriting and claims, which will allow us to assist you with a policy written in the state your vehicle is registered and then we will list the address in Washington the vehicle is garaged to get the proper rate."

Then more about multi-policy, Driver+ discount etc that's already been discussed here.
That’s encouraging that they seem to be open to insuring

I will definitely let you (and the world) know when my Guide contacts me and I have a firm idea of a delivery date. I imagine anyone who regularly looks at this forum will post. As a matter of fact, it is May 1st, this is the month some lucky individuals will hear from their Guide. I think the first person to hear should start a new thread called "I just talked to my Guide and...".

I would do it pre-emptively but can you imagine how much of a row it would cause if a thread with that title popped up today. It would be filled with hundreds of entries with snarky comments even before the first true post.

Hey, Rivian Guide,
I was in the shower and thought I heard the phone ring. It’s 6:56 am May 1, so I assume it must have been you trying to contact me with my R1T delivery info.
Anyway, please call back. I’ll have my cell phone with me at all times... even the shower going forward — or maybe I won’t shower so I don’t miss your call again.
Thanks.

The Colorado jobs for several service and customer experience roles seem also fo be filled...they are still showing on their website, but when clicking on them they are no longer active. Odds seem to stack up in Colorado’s favor...??

I’m excited to see this thread pop up and find out that initial contact was made via email, for all of you that are posting about no longer screening your calls ?
