That's a No without saying No. Right? By the time your guide (based on your home location) contacts you, you're 4 weeks out from delivery. It's too late to change your delivery location to expedite.
yeah... that’s my guess as well. Kinda annoying to publish “criteria” and not be able to speak to it in a way that could allow people to adjust ahead of time for things that aren’t material to them that could have an effect on the delivery outcome.

Since they are basing it on Service availability, they whole point is basing it on where you live.

I agree with this. But some of us are nomads. I’m technically a resident of WY, have a home and business in MT and a home in UT. I have my UT address listed with my reservation, and will probably leave it that way since my gut says it will have priority over MT or WY for delivery. But my drivers license is WY and I plan to actually title and register the car (for tax reasons) under my MT LLC. I’m sure my guide is going to get very confused very quickly!

Here's a new twist on a delivery-priority factor that I'd like to see. How about the age of the buyer...oldest gets it first, then move on down the age scale!! We're too old to wait much longer!! We could die before we get ours.? The youngsters can afford to wait a little longer...we can't! Age before beauty. :CWL:
I love that idea. I would probably be one of the firsts :like:

Similar boat here, AD military with 3 different states in the mix for residence, registration, and purchasing. What if I get orders for overseas right after purchase? Or even just a remote CONUS location? Why can't I just purchase/pickup in a major city?

The idea is to have service and support available where the vehicle will be located. There will be some customers with unusual circumstances, but they want them delivered/parked/used where they can help with any issues.

Someone that gives a drop box address in LA, then drives it home to remote SD (as an example) means that the service network is not yet set up to help with any issues. Polestar allows people outside of 150 miles of their centers to take delivery, but with the caveat that they have to bring them back to the service center for any issues. Otherwise they will come to you (with a loaner if needed). Rivian will not be set up with technicians to cover 100% of the US right out of the gate.

There’s also the insurance, registration, tax, titling, etc. that have to be considered. While I’m sure it’s a huge bit, they aren’t just trying to minimize shipping costs.

This is a primary reason why dealers are a thing. ?

Launch Edition Green will be the first color based on my experience with Year One cars that offer a special color.

I guess I'm in the opposite situation from many here :whew: as I'm happy to wait out the first year of production and await my Max pack R1S sometime in 2022. Our 3rd kiddo (if all goes to plan) should arrive sometime in mid/late 2022 which is driving our need for a 3-row.

I'm happy you all are so excited, but the idea of getting a truly first-run product would make me nervous. Says the guy with a 2018 Model 3, which is about the same, around 1 year after production start. Granted Rivian isn't Tesla, so I have higher hopes.
I just don't want to be late 2022.

I could be wrong on this but I think you might be able to glean where Rivian is opening the first delivery/service centers by looking at their career openings for “vehicle delivery/operations specialist” and “vehicle delivery/operations manager”.

When I bought my Tesla in 2015 in NC, Tesla wasn’t allowed to do any of that. They simply emailed me a bill of sale, and then I had to go to DMV and deal, with the title and registration myself. Depending on each state’s dealer licensing regs, I’m thinking Rivian will have some of the same issues. Which I’m fine with. They give me the car and a bill of sale, and then I can title and register it in whatever state suits me.

Lil'O Annie,

I like the way you think! I don't even buy green bananas any more. I have my "I Like Ike" bumper sticker ready for my R1T. Let's roll! Time's a wastin'! ⌛

Since the R1T is first out of the gate it would be interesting to see how these numbers break down between the two models. I think some colors would be more popular on one model than the other.

FWIW, I asked CS about interstate (registering in FL, live in WA for me) registration and insurance:

"Rivian (and your dedicated Guide) will take care of the registration for you and in most cases, there are no tax or registration repercussions if you take delivery outside of where you register. You’d pay taxes and register in your home state, with the transaction simply happening somewhere else.

Rivian Insurance has partnered with some nationally known carriers like Nationwide who will be handling both underwriting and claims, which will allow us to assist you with a policy written in the state your vehicle is registered and then we will list the address in Washington the vehicle is garaged to get the proper rate."

Then more about multi-policy, Driver+ discount etc that's already been discussed here.

FYI, you'll still have to pay taxes here unless you plan on leaving within 90 days...
WA State Licensing (DOL) Official Site: Vehicle and boat registration for military personnel stationed in Washington
Buying a vehicle while stationed in Washington
Sales and use tax
  • If you'll be in Washington for more than 90 days, you must pay Washington state sales or use tax, even if you register the vehicle in your home state. You won't need to pay taxes in your home state unless their tax rate is higher than Washington's.
