Better yet, improve R2 quality and reliability such that service visits as a percentage of total on-road vehicles DECREASES.
Just by not including air suspension you'll be removing the vast majority of issues from the R2.

If these specs hold, I'm skeptical a 283-mile Single Motor Standard Pack at $45K will be competitive by Q3 or Q4 2026, when any real volume could take place. Who knows, but I think 300 miles is the new norm at this price point...
The Ionia 5 has sold very well with a 270 mile range in a $60k package.

Humor me here, people.

theoretically, if they put a Max pack from the R1 into an R2, wouldn’t that give like a crazy amount of range? And to figure out cost, work backwards from that till an optimal range/cost is achieved - goal being to get no-doubt-best-in-market range at reasonable cost.

wouldn’t doing this be more important than new type of battery pack/assembly which I think RJ posted about recently?
No

Unless there's some voodoo going on with the drag coefficient despite it's SUV brick-ness, it doesn't seem like the math would work on anything less than the current KWH.
There was some voodoo with the R1T tho...

Rivian has good motor efficiency even compared to Tesla which does (Lucid seems to be better)

Leasing Tesla Model 3 until Rivian R3X comes out.

I agree with you and things could certainly change in another year before R2’s release, but last year I swear there was an MKBHD video with RJ where he hinted and RJ confirmed that the single motor R2 would be under 300 miles and probably be closer to 270 miles of range. I’m trying to find the video.

Those are some pretty good numbers. Give me a large pack and 375 all day long.

We have the details on the battery pack construction now. That can tell us kwh. Seems like all we should have to do is guess at the efficiency, and we should have range estimates. Maybe use efficiency numbers from like vehicles? I guess that is what ABRP did.

RJ recently showed a photo of the R2 battery pack, it contained 767 cells.
Each cell has a capacity of approximately .119kWh based on the same size current production Chinese cells. That gives us a total (theoretical) capacity of 91kWh. De-rate that by 3% for the top and bottom buffers and we're left with 88kWh available. If the R2 gets 3.5mi/kWh efficiency, that would give us a theoretical range of 308 miles. Was that the standard pack or the large pack he showed us and mentioned the number of cells inside?? Who knows at this point.

Science. Comptutional fluid dynamics, validated and refined through actual wind tunnel testing. Formula 1 stuff.

Update:
ABRP confirmed these range figures are just them guessing based on public info.

Original post:

R2 Single Motor Standard Pack: 283ml
R2 Single Motor Large Pack: 386mi
R2 Dual Motor Standard Pack: 270mi
R2 Dual Motor Large Pack: 375mi
R2 Tri Motor Large Pack: 365mi
R3: 394mi
R3X: 360mi

“While using A Better Routeplanner, ABRP for short, to loosely plan out some trips this summer… I was very surprised to see not only R2 but R3 and R3X options available.”
Using ABRP’s backend tools, jb_nelson_ extracted trip data and performance estimates that suggested the R2 will come in three driveline configurations, Single, Dual, and Tri Motor, with two battery pack options for the Single and Dual and a Large Pack-only setup for the Tri. He calculated likely EPA ranges using a regression analysis comparing ABRP data with known R1T and R1S figures:
"R2 Single Motor Standard Pack: 283miles.
R2 Single Motor Large Pack: 386 miles.
R2 Dual Motor Standard Pack: 270 miles.
R2 Dual Motor Large Pack: 375 miles.
R2 Tri Motor Large Pack: 365mi."
As long as I can get 300+ on the dual motor I'll be happy

Until any of these enter mass production this is all speculation. “Never bet on the come!”

But my god, what a butt-ass ugly car.
Oh no, really? I think the Ioniq 5 looks slick. 20 year old me would be wanting that one. Throw a couple of Fosgate 10”s in the back. The Ioniq 6, on the other hand, looks like a car that’s very sad at its lot in life.
