Dash Cam coming soon in OTA Update! - Per RJ

Which soon is this? Like saying at dawn that the sun is going to rise soon, soon? Or like Rivian telling me my R1S is coming soon, soon?

Rivian has bastardized the word soon for me, as an estimator of time. Going to use it exclusively as a noun from here on out.

On geologic timescales, it’s all moving very quickly.

The Algorithm God sent me down a YouTube hole of dashcam videos... I walked away wondering how I ever drove without it. It's insurance against hit & runs, insurance scams, people claiming they had the green light/you cut them off, and other situations where things could get down to "he said, she said". I got one for my Ioniq 5, but I did turn off the camera in the cabin... I figure it could only ever catch me picking my nose, yelling at my kids, or reading this forum.

Yup. Watch the videos on youtube, tik tok, there is a dedicated forum on reddit. You will be googling dash cams like crazy after.

I really want them to enable it as fast as possible, but I'm worried that if they do it there could be a bug that drains battery when parked so I want them to take their time and do it correctly, make sure it is tested out, and make sure it has options for on all the time, on when driving only, on when parked only, turn off at certain battery remaining, etc.

I love that we're getting our own, in-house, integrated dash cam, no matter when. I was amused to have all three of the following ads pop up within this thread in the five minutes I spent reading it.

I was genuinely interested in looking for an integrated dash cam unit like the one Escort is bundling with their newest radar/laser detectors, but happy I waited.

Like the old saying goes, "The early bird may get the worm, but it's the 2nd mouse that gets the cheese."

knocking on wood, but my last accident was in 80's when rear ended at a light. Person admitted it to me, but when time for insurance they said they were pushed from behind by a hit and run (not) and so I did end up paying 100 bucks for hit and run instead of it all being covered. Pissed me off at the time, but then 100 bucks was a lot to me back then.

I really like having dash cams in the vehicles. It's saved me an insurance argument a few times on claims.

BTW, I'd not recommend the radar detector. Ours went off so much when I put it in, the thing drove me crazy with false alarms and picking up traffic light cameras at roads parallel to the freeway.

It lasted one road trip and now it's a nice trinket that sits in a box with other electronics in my closet storage box beside the multi-power charger adaptor and my DVD polisher/de-scratcher.

The one below, is in our Kona EV. I accidentally damaged a previous iteration that I had in the Mustang. They sent me a replacement cable and rear camera for free, even though I damaged it myself. So decent customer service.

I'm curious why people need/want the dashcam so bad? I never found a use case for it in my Tesla, didn't want to be recorded, and always turned it off. But I'd love to hear from others the utility of it and why it's a requested feature.

Just to add another, a drunk woman fell asleep behind the wheel of her car behind my wife at a stoplight. Rolled into us damaging the bumper. We had to get it fixed due to it being a lease. It took them over a year to get us our "down" back because the woman claimed she wasn't involved in an accident, even though she was arrested near the scene.

Same thing happened to me in the 90s, but luckily a cop rolled up quickly and the driver repeated his lie to the cop. I watched as the cop examined that fool's bumper, them gave him a very hefty ticket.

I don't think the same thing would happen these days. There aren't any cops left in Seattle.

People are targeting high value / unique vehicles assuming the owners have deep pockets. Rivian's are definitely in that category right now.

Ya all depends on where you live. Here in Chicago there are some crazy people and the cops do nothing... Watched a semi truck drive into oncoming traffic to run a red light then cut into traffic when the light changed to turn into where he was going. Cop was sitting next to me saw the whole thing and just kept driving.
