Turns out 7k lb truck wins vs Civic. Three weeks into ownership and loving the truck so far. Was on the way home yesterday and stopped at a red light. After turning green started to accelerate when felt a slight lurch forward and a bunch of lights go on the dash. The lights went away and I started to look around and find out what happened. Started to see smoke and then noticed a little bit of blue sticking up above the tailgate.

Turns out the blue was a Honda Civic that had hit dead center of the rear of the truck probably around 20 to 30 MPH. No airbags for me with Civic owners going off. Everyone was safe and no injuries.

After all reports got filled out I was still able to drive the truck home with only a few warnings about sensors being out. Insurance claim has been started with USAA so we'll see how this goes. I live in NW Florida so nearest service center is Atlanta. Hopefully that doesn't complicate things to much. Please see the attached photos and I'll be sure to update through the process.

On a good note the other owner had an adorable American bulldog that was perfectly safe but enjoyed making friends after. Send any questions my way.

Update #1: Claim with my insurance has gone in. Won't continue the process unless other vehicle company picks a fight with me. Have contacted the insurance of the at fault vehicle. Still waiting to hear back, but I know a claim was entered by the other driver because I have an agents number. Fun times had by all.

Update two: after talking with USAA I will likely be going to the closest rivian approved area. Two and half hours away. Not the worst distance. First appointment is April 3rd. Let the long process continue.

Update three: vehicle was dropped off at rivian approved collision center late Monday night. Was pulled apart and as expected there was some amount more damage than my first pictures showed. The center sent pictures to rivian to see what they say. I'm less optimistic after I saw the pictures but hope springs eternal. Will update again once I hear back from rivian.

Glad all are safe. If that’s a bulge in your bed; it’s likely totaled.

Glad everyone was ok, including the bulldog! I hope they don’t try to say your truck is totaled. When I saw the pic of your bed being bent it made me wonder. Insurance companies have been doing this with EVs lately. They don’t seem to want to pay to fix them.

Glad you are ok and I hope that bed issue is just the plastic bending and not the structure!

Temp tag still on it! And in the daytime no less. I was just in FL last weekend and reminded by how aggressive the drivers are back home.

$5 they total it. I bet you have subframe damage for sure, possibly worse.

Probably not what you want to hear, or maybe it is, but the last one I saw like this was deemed a total loss.

Yeah I’m with others here saying that bulge in the bed is indicative of frame type damage and is most likely totaled.

I would want a new truck, especially since it’s a rear end and 100% the fault of the Civic driver. And lest us not forget, “diminished value”. Your “repaired” truck will carry a lower value than an equivalent not repaired one. Be sure to file a diminished value claim with their insurance company as well. Probably $20k right there.

If it is repairable, in addition to filing a diminished value claim against the other party's ins co... they are also responsible for for your deductible as well since you were rear-ended by their insured.

I grew up learning to drive around DC. To be determined on who is truly worse Florida drivers or beltway drivers.

The flip side is the potential wait on a replacement. A repair may take weeks, but a replacement may take several months.

Hmm... totaling would be exactly what I would want in this situation. I'd get a new one in a month or two instead of them pouring thousands into fixing it (as best they can) and then one day trying to sell it in competition with other R1Ts for sale that haven't been rear ended. Silver is a bitch to match, especially with all that flake. You will always see it.

Also, bonus, the replacement cost is higher than what he paid (pre-hike), so if its totaled and he gets a check, it will be more than he paid. This is probably true even he doesn't have new car replacement clause in his policy.
