IRVINE, Calif., March 4, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- What's better than companies who want to preserve the world for future generations, unveiling the ice cream truck of the future? Rolling out two electric "scoop trucks," a sweet collaboration between Ben & Jerry's, Vermont's beloved ice cream maker, and Rivian, the all-electric automaker.

Built on the Rivian Commercial Van, the new Ben & Jerry's scoop trucks will modernize everything people love about an ice cream truck. Fans will have a chance to check out the new scoop trucks when one debuts at South by Southwest (SXSW) in Austin, Texas this week.

Following SXSW, the Ben & Jerry's scoop trucks will be hitting the road, bringing good eats and good vibes to the Rivian community across the country and will pop up at events in Ben & Jerry's home state of Vermont. Rivian's recent announcement launching the Rivian Commercial Van to businesses across the U.S. has helped make these scoop trucks possible, offering unique solutions to fleet customers looking to transition off fossil fuels and into modern, electric commercial solutions.

Part of Ben & Jerry's mission is to use its operations to have a positive impact on its community and the planet. This alliance will help serve up smiles by bringing a Ben & Jerry's experience to fans with outstanding reliability and performance, with the added benefit of a reduced environmental footprint.

"Collaborating with the Ben & Jerry's team to build the next generation of electric scoop trucks has been an incredible experience. It's one of those projects that just makes the team smile," said Brian Gase, Senior Director of Prototype Development at Rivian. "We can't wait for people to stop by for some ice cream and see it in action for the first time during SXSW!"

"Working with Rivian, an industry leader that is committed to sustainability is an ice cream dream come true," said Ben & Jerry's Sean Slattery, US Integrated Marketing project lead. "Today, Rivian helped Ben & Jerry's reduce our reliance on fossil fuels in a small way, while making things a little bit cooler... which, as an ice cream company, is extremely difficult to do," joked Slattery.

With an impressive range of 161 miles*, the Rivian Commercial Vans will allow for more events, more catering gigs, and dishing out more ice cream than ever to Ben & Jerry's and Rivian's collective fans.

Love it. I want to see these EDVs everywhere. This is an untapped revenue stream. I do think the range is kind of low though for the price.
If I was in the C-suite at Rivian I would be lighting a fire under my sales team to get EDVs out the door.

Agreed. Partnerships like this are huge. Also, demonstrates the versatility of the EDV. Shows that the vehicle is not just limited to transporting goods from A to B.

I'd love to see this be common in the food-truck scene. Way better than the generators they currently use.

It seems like this might be the place to consider solar panels on the roof, if there was a way to wire them in. While they aren't going to give much range, I'm guessing that roof HVAC plus a freezer is probably drawing 2-3kw? That could be 15-20% of the battery across an 8 hour shift assuming they're still using the 135kWh battery.

Curious how many B&J are going to purchase. These make so much sense for the food trucks.

Leasing Tesla Model 3 until Rivian R3X comes out.
The range will be even lower if the battery is powering that giant freezer!
Hm… that’s true. I really am surprised that these have such low range for the price.

Wikipedia says that the EDV has the same 135kWh battery as the large pack on the original R1, although they mention a transition to an undefined LFP battery.

One of the biggest challenges with electrified transport is that the energy needs increase rapidly as vehicle size increases. The same battery that gives an R1 ~300 miles of range gives an EDV roughly half the same range. Battery size and costs go up pretty rapidly.
