I have owned several RV’s and towed vehicles behind (TOADS). But, I’ve never owned a travel trailer. For the knowledgeable on this forum, here’s a few questions (knowing that the firm information isn’t really out there yet):
How much of a travel trailer will I be able to tow comfortably (understanding there’s a lot of “ultralights out there)? By how much, I mean length and weight.
Given an assumed R2 range of 300 miles, what would the range drop to using a travel trailer?
Any trailer suggestions to look at?

thx in advance.
The most important thing for range is aerodynamics. A tall camper with a mostly flat front sits in the wind and really hurts your range, especially at higher speeds. My R1T's "usable" range towing our Grand Design Imagine AIM 18BH is 100 miles +-10.

Based on what I have seen others post, a good rule of thumb is 50% less range when towing. Of course the faster you go the worse it will be. And smaller more aerodynamic trailers have less impact. But use 50% as your starting point

If traveling far and DC fast charging, you will rarely use more than 70% of the battery between charging stops, so multiply the range number by 0.7 to get your range between stops.

So 0.5 x 0.7 x 300 = 105 miles. When it isn't cold or raining. LoL.

Rj did say it would have best in class towing. The Tesla model x can tow 5K. So I would expect a number north of that. The Jeep Grand Cherokee is a similar sized vehicle and can tow up to 6200. if we are considering Ice vehicles in the same class it would have to match that. But if not I would expect something north of 5K.

Sounds like range, not towing capacity, will be the big issue.

It should have decent range (when not towing)... in a recent thread about the R2 battery, RJ confirmed the battery will have 768 cells each with about 119wH of energy. That will give you a pack rating of about 91kWh before they take a few kWh out for top and bottom buffer. So if we get 88kWh usable and the R2 efficiency is around 3.5mi/kWh that gives the R2 an estimated range of 308 miles. That's not too shabby for a mid-size SUV.

Agree. Hope they offer a max pack too for road tripping. I don't tow anything but it would be nice to get over 400 miles.

That parts good. The towing range would be the problem. Hope I can get a tri motor.

Not much you can do about that, it's a smaller vehicle with less room for batteries underneath. By the look of that battery pack RJ posted photos of... it was filled with cells from side to side and end to end already.

I am keeping my fingers crossed for a range extender battery that mounts on the back.

Based upon towing with an R1 and seeing results from a Model X I'd say 1.6mpkwh is about the best you can expect. 90kw battery means 144 miles of max range. The battery just won't be big enough and the trailer doesn't care how aero dynamic the tow vehicle is.

Leasing Tesla Model 3 until Rivian R3X comes out.
That bike rack thing is amazing. Rivian is continuing to innovate! My interest in the R2 just moved up a notch.
Actually they canceled the modular rack thing that you saw in those pics and have opted for a standard hitch. Trying to cut costs.

Still waiting on hitch capacity info, that may be the deciding factor for anyone who intends to tow with the R2. 3,500lbs would be the bare minimum, 5,000lbs would be much better though, anything over 5,000lbs is just bonus level :D
