None of the pictures I've seen so far show a hitch cover on the back. Someone asked about a tow hitch and Rivian confirmed both will have a hitch although didn't provide any details. I'm hoping for at least a 3500lb tow limit.

Just visited the Phoenix SC and I asked the same question about a tow hitch; his answer was "definitely" but it might be an option rather than standard like in the R1s. Yay!! :whew::fingerscrossed:

That bike rack thing is amazing. Rivian is continuing to innovate! My interest in the R2 just moved up a notch.

Great news. I was asking about it.

I was pretty sure the R2 would have it, but with no mention of towing and no visual evidence of a hitch, I wanted confirmation.

And, yes, that bike rack looks like a very solid approach to carrying several bikes on the back. Hopefully, they create more external options for carrying outdoors stuff. With the smaller vehicles, we may need them.

That seems really unstable to me, unless there's a way to support the receiver in the middle - all the weight of a trailer/bike rack/cargo box is gonna push right in the middle of whatever bar the goes between the accessory points.

Even aftermarket hitch add-ons for other cars mount to the structure under the bumper somehow.

I'm guessing it'll be behind some facia just like on the Model Y, with the non-hitch option just not having the cutout and cover that the hitch option would have.

But if I'm proven wrong, then no worries!

That statement reads like it's an option. I guess they've gotta simplify the build to get the price point they want.

I bet these are demo vehicles and currently it does not exist. I suspect they will add it to the final design.

On one of the videos about the R2/R3 launch, they were talking with RJ and he said they'd have class leading towing, just like the R1T and R1S. So, whatever that means, maybe 5k for R2?

These are definitely super early prototypes. They don’t even have the yellow and red side marker required by law.

I think the tow hitch will be optional. If Rivian makes it standard, they might not be able to sell too many accessories for the accessory port. Owner will just buy aftermarket bike racks or storage at a likely lower price and use the standard tow hitch to haul them.

I agree. Rivian can't afford to include features like a tow hitch for no cost to the buyer. On a lot of vehicles it is an option you pay for. Rivian needs to do the same thing, and maybe they can actually make a profit on the R2.

Remember that safe tow weight rating is a function of wheelbase, so I would not expect much more than 4k to 5k. R3 will be less than R2.

I will put on my speculative hat for a moment. My guess is that R2 will have a towing capacity in the 5000 lbs range and that R3 will be 3000 or less. It's possible R2 could be in the 3500 range too.

Short SUVs don't usually do too well towing heavier trailers. Power is not the issue...it's stability.
