It's a CYA strategy. If something prevents them releasing it on/around T-day (or plans change), they haven't missed promised date.
Many on this forum will "Give Thanks" whenever it comes out.

Has any auto manufacturer been hit by COVID?

Highly mechanized factory work seems pretty low risk even with COVID.

Massive room with extremely high air volume, well ventilated, individuals standing very far apart from one another at their stations, masks, etc etc.

Granted, Rivian is likely to be mush more organized and have more space to work with than Tesla, but the image of individual workers far apart when assembling a vehicle is usually not the scenario.

Plus, it's not usually the factory floor, many major outbreaks at plants (food processing, etc) have been tied to the lunch/break room areas.

Given the recent data, I do expect Rivian to be shut down again to some degree, but IIRC they already allowed for that in their promised June delivery date.

It's also not just about the factory. If the community in which the factory is located has a severe outbreak, everyone may be forced to stay home. If the communities in which their suppliers' factories are located have an outbreak, they will be forced to stay home and unable to deliver components which means the vehicle assembly lines will grind to a halt even if fully staffed.

Hi David, Our configurator is launching Monday, November 16, for preorder holders. This is a full week before everyone else gets access. In anticipation, we’re sharing more about our equipment packages, features, pricing and the Launch Edition — a special launch configuration with U.S. deliveries for the R1T starting in June 2021 and R1S in August 2021.
