Warmer months are approaching and I for one could not be more excited! But that also means car ovens are back, and Rivians are no exception to that, in fact we often hear our Rivian clients complaining of how hot their Rivian seems to get in the summer.
Many can be mislead with the term 'factory tinted' windows, but this is typically referring to privacy glass also know as dyed glass. The glass in this case has pigments and dye added into the glass directly at manufacturing. While the glass does give off the appearance of being tinted, it does not give you the benefits. The glass can still let in harmful UV rays that are responsible for skin tanning, skin aging and wrinkles, which can also contribute to skin cancer. Adding a layer of nano ceramic film can reject up to 99% of UV rays which gives your skin a layer of protection, as well as reduces the sun damage on the vehicles upholstery and dash. A nano ceramic tint also provides Infrared (IR) rejection, IR is responsible for the majority of the heat you feel on you when you're seating in your vehicle. Nano ceramic films offer a range of IR protection depending on which film you go with.
Another cool thing about tint, is that it can double as protection from shattered glass. The adhesive and protective polyester layers help hold the shattered glass in place, reducing the chances of the glass flying into the vehicle and harming you or a passenger in the event of an accident. Which also can cause window breakers to think twice before smashing your window.
A common question we get is "does tint go on the outside or the inside of a vehicle?" It does go on the inside of the car, if a piece of film needs a shrink, which is common for windshields and sunroofs, then the tint will get shrunk on the outside of the glass, but it will still get installed on the inside.
If you currently have tint on your windows or are planning on getting tint in the future, do not use glass cleaner that has ammonia in it. Ammonia can break down and remove the adhesive that holds the tint on glass, thus casing the tint to peel or discolor. We like to use Sprayway and XPEL Glass Cleaner, using a waffle or micro fiber towel is recommended.
Another common questions we get is what kind of tint and what % of tint are other Rivian owners getting. While like a lot of things, it comes down to personal preference, there are some common trends we see. Choosing which level of tint usually comes down to how much the heat bothers the client, if their skin is sensitive to the sun, if they are driving around children and price.
While the options and brands vary at shops in the area, we use XPEL Tint and we offer 3 different levels of film to choose from.
Color Stable - more commonly called CS - Carbon tint - rejects 99% of UV and has some glare reduction.
This is typically your cheapest tint and most people will get it for privacy or aesthetic. People who get this tint usually get it in a 20% or 30% on their front two windows, so that the windows match the back better. 20% means that 20% of the light is still coming through the windows. If their back windows do not have a factory dyed glass, then they typically get it on the back side windows and rear window as well.
XR Black - Nano Ceramic tint - Single layer tint - rejects 99% of UV and 78% of IR - has more glare reduction then CS.
This is one of the more common tint option for our Rivian clients, is provides a good amount of heat rejection. One of our more common requests is 70% on the windshield, 20% or 30% on the front two side windows, 70% on the back side windows, rear windows and sunroof.
XR Plus - Nano Ceramic tint - muti layer tint - rejects 99% of UV and 96% of IR - has the most glare reduction.
This will be the most expensive tint and best for those who have kids, have sensitive skin and wants the most protection.
Nano ceramic benefits that carbon tint does not provide:
- Superior heat rejection.
- Enhanced clarity.
- Durability and Fade Resistance.
- Signal Friendly.
- Skin Cancer Foundation Recommendation.
- Extended battery range, as the vehicle is spending less energy to cool the vehicle.
While we do see a lot of Rivian clients opt for the popular package above, we get all kind of requests. Some will want 5% all the way around and others will want 70% all the way around. Others will tint only the front two windows so they match closer to rear windows. Most tints will offer some kind of warranty on their film, again this can very from shop to shop and brand to brand. XPEL offers a lifetime tint warranty and is the Rivian chosen brand proven by XPEL-Rivian Referral Program. Our shop specifically is a part of this program and we also offer a lifetime warranty on the installation!
If you have questions about the program, about tint in general or want some quotes, do not hesitate to reach out and we would be more then happy to help!
