Another question is here is, this is just a glorified driver+ that we can use on any road, right? Beside the hands free, it is not level 3 autonomy, right? Perhaps I am missing something.
also, the harness will be $200, looks like the ones they have out there for other cars is $99, is the Rivian one that much more involved? Want to see why it is double the price.
thx!!

Non nagging driver + that'll work on any road, possibly lane change when prompted by a turn signal. The price is high because it's a development harness that someone is building, comma hasn't created one

I've known about Comma.ai for quite some time and am familiar with George Hotz's work. I own a Gen 1 and would love to get Comma.ai working. My main curiosity is how they achieve functionality with just front-facing camera. Don’t they need a 360-degree view, especially for automatic lane changes? Understanding their approach would be really helpful.

From their website, they say this about the cameras.

"Three 1080p cameras w/ 140 dB of dynamic range: dual-cam 360° vision and a narrow cam to see far-away objects"

Anyway, I donated to help the cause. Thanks @CTRedCanyon.

Lane changes are initiated by the user via the turn signal - you have to make sure it's clear, then signal and it'll change lanes for you. The newer iterations m which I haven't tested yet also use sensors from the vehicle to detect blind spots and prevent a lane change maneuver, even if the driver told it to do so.

It's a really good level 2 driver assistance system that works on any road, and in all weather. Think Tesla Autopilot, not FSD.

I'm just guessing at the final price but it depends what's involved - Rivians may need to connect to the OBDII and the automation computer under the passengers seat, so more connections and wiring than some. Currently to get a harness is more about early access and helping fund the development, as there are people working on this pretty much full time funded only by our generosity in buying the harness. It's a contribution more than trying to get the best deal on a harness.

Early adopters typically pay more. I wouldn't have even considered going this route originally but the factory driver's aid is so poor it often doesn't even work on a lot of highways. Even then it sometimes fails or for some reason won't engage at all, on major 4+ lane divided highways.

I'd like something comparable to Tesla's AP. This should get me there. I don't mind funding the development. It is a small price to pay.

Comma 3x is basically a 360 degree camera like an insta 360. It is just 2, 180 degree cameras, one for the cockpit and one for the driving. And then a narrow camera.

The car does not see anything other than what is forward facing.

The auto lane change if I am not mistaken relies on manually determining the lane is empty.

Some cars support blind spot monitoring but that is about it.

Great. He said he was working on the install instructions when I last spoke with him.

On my 2024 Explorer Comma 3X will change lanes when I hit the blinker and give the steering wheel a little nudge. If the Ford blind spot detection system thinks there's a vehicle there the Comma will cancel the lane change request and give me a notification. It works really well. It probably changes lanes more abruptly than I would, but it's not uncomfortable for passengers.

Notice where? I'm still waiting myself.
Lukas sent me an email Sunday with the install instructions and tracking for the cable. Check junk/spam to see if you got one too, maybe it was flagged for some reason.
