Exciting progress! Lukas Lötkolben aka loetkolben on the Comma AI discord, have put in an amazing amount of effort and work and been able to partially port over OpenPilot to the Gen 1 R1 platform!

For those who have no idea what I'm talking about, OpenPilot is an opensource self-driving software that runs on a device called a Comma (current model is called Comma 3X), giving Tesla Autopilot type self driving functions on all streets - surface roads, highways, even unpaved and unmarked roads. I personally used it on past vehicles, and in my opinion it is the second best self-driving system on the market, behind FSD. The fact that someone is taking the time to make it work for the vehicles Rivian has basically abandoned is amazing! One tester reportedly drove 35 minutes on autopilot.

To be clear, this project is still in development, and additional work needs to be done to control the acceleration/deceleration, as well as fine tune some of the steering controls. It's not ready for prime time just yet. But this is a major milestone.

I am going to be buying an early access harness from loetkolben to help with the development, which is what will be needed to hook up the C3X device on the windshield to the factory cameras and other systems of the car. If anyone is interested in helping this project I'd recommend reaching out to him for a harness, as he said, it'll probably be cheaper later but buying one now helps make this possible.

Anyways, thought I would share the exciting progress with the rest of the Rivian community - there is hope! Our vehicles will very likely have vastly improved driving capabilities soon.

OMFG... I should've taken the BlackFriday deal from CommaAi!

EDIT: I AM definitely buying a harness and I'll contribute to this project. I've been following Comma ever since its inception!

This is wild... One of my close and best friends was the CEO of Comma.ai for a short while. I just gave him a hard time for not giving me a heads up on this! :p

So many questions. For a start, what does it cost?
Once it reaches normal production, around $1200 for the Comma 3X device that does that work and $300 for the harness that connects it to the vehicle.

Right now he's charging around $999 for the early run harnesses to help fund development. Either way well worth it.

This is great news, I did a lot of video capture for Comma before they launched when I was driving a ton for work. Pumped about this possibility

This looks cool. Does it make a R1 autonomous? Will it void any warranties?

Looks interesting. Probably not my cup of tea (I enjoy driving too much to even use D+ very often), but very cool for those who want something like this.

Is there a subscription required with this? It looks like "turn-by-turn" GPS requires a $10 or $24 monthly sub & I can't figure out how "autopilot" would work if the device wasn't following GPS directions to the destination.

So $1k for JUST the harness?

A quick search didn't find links or a way to buy/support this. Do you have links?

This is still in early development phase, he's literally making an early run of the first 15 to fund the development. Obviously $1K isn't just the harness price, it's to support the project and this coming to fruition. He's putting full time effort into this project and doesn't even make money off it, aside from our generosity and a $3000 bounty offered by Comma once it works. Not a lot considering the 12+ months he's putting into it. You can try reaching out to him on Youtube or loetkolben on Discord -

It doesn't turn for you yet AFAIK, it's just really good/advanced lane centering that works on any road, selects the correct lane at intersections, etc. In some vehicles it can do stop signs and traffic signals as well. It's not FSD. It can also change lanes on command by blinking in that direction (after you check). There are some newer "navigate on autopilot" type functions, which to be honest I never tried or got into when I used it, but that did have some kind of route planning/GPS built into the unit to facilitate that. I think it could take highway exits/merge onto different highways etc.

Such a huge stress reliever for congested areas, stop & go traffic, boring drives where all you're doing is following the car in front of you for miles, when you're tired, long road trips etc.

This is a very early version without full control yet. It's not going to be twitchy at all. Openpilot works great on other vehicles, and is very smooth.
