I have a simple question on switching drive modes. I wasn't able to find the answer in the owners guide:

My question is so simple, I’m hoping it doesn’t offend anyone….😬

Can you safely change drive modes on the fly? Say I’m in All-purpose mode driving on a wet road at 55 mph. The road surface transitions to slush then snow. Can I simply push “snow” mode at my current speed? Or, must I pull over or exit, come to a complete stop, then switch modes before resuming?

Thank you in advance!

Yes. The vehicle Will not let you change while driver + is active, but otherwise you can change modes “on the fly”

Great, TY! I assume Driver + = Driver Assistance ( adaptive Cruise control and highway assist, etc.)

Same for suspension height. Basically anything that is ok to change on the fly it will let you and it will tell you if you need to stop or start doing something (get out of cruise control or put vehicle in drive)

What about switching from into and out of Conserve mode on a Quad? I only change it getting on a highway or exiting one at ~25 mph.

I do it all of the time on the highway. I do not care about the speed I just make sure I’m not accelerating or decelerating for the couple of seconds it takes to change.

Correct. You are unable to change drive modes when Driver+ (Cruise control and auto-steering) is active. In addition, also having just the cruise control active also locks out changing drive modes.

Suspension changes seem to only be locked out when a door (both the cabin doors and gear tunnel doors) is open. This is apparently to reduce the risk of lowering the door down onto an object.

Changing between All-Purpose and Conserve is generally done when driving at a steady state on the highway at cruise speed. This isn't necessary to make the change at ~25 mph, but you do want to be driving at a constant speed. Some have mentioned noises when engaging/disengaging the clutch, but I haven't noticed that by changing in and out of Conserve mode in a steady state at highway speeds. I've only used Conserve mode a handful of times and mostly just ignored that.

I just checked the Owner's Manual, which is the definitive guide on your vehicle, not some idiot on the Internet like myself - In the section on drive modes (pages 181-188), they make no mention of restrictions on when you can and can't change modes. The restrictions above are learned from alerts on the dash when you try to make an change that is not allowed.

The nice thing about EVs is that for the most part, if there's something that will damage the vehicle it won't let you do it in the first place.

Battery too cold to sustain power without damage? Regen, charging, and power limits!

Going too fast for certain suspension heights? Those heights can't even be selected.

They've done a great job making the system communicate when certain changes can/can't be made. And if it is available, you can assume Rivian has determined it to be safe to do without damage

Mine will not switch between conserve and all-purpose above 80, you have to drop below 80 to 79 to make the switch.

Some drive modes and settings won't activate above certain speeds.

^ This, it won't go into conserve mode from AP or sport above 80 or 85 mph. Can't recall which speed but I've experienced it. I think it actually grey'd conserve out.

Also off road has speed limitations I think. Extract height is 15mph high is 45mph. Probably something with rock crawl on the quads too. Sport is a paltry 112mph 😆

I change modes from All Purpose to Snow Mode all the time on my drives to Mt Rose Ski Resort on the fly. I usually wait until the roads get wet/icy/snowy then switch to Snow Mode to lock in 4wheel drive. Speed can very but my speed is usually 40 and below when I switch. Works well with no issues and I have been using it all season.

If you toggle conserve and AP every minute of the day, every day while driving, you'll probably wear out something (like your compressor), but many of the things the drive modes affect change constantly as you drive anyways. Cutting off or starting the rear motor(s)? That's just what EVs are meant to do. Lower or raise suspension? It happens while you drive and changes automatically with speed. Changes the pedal throttle response or steering input? Just a software mapping.

When things go beyond that (e.g., lifting the suspension to its limits that can only support 20mph), the UI will alert you and require that you be stopped to make the change.

So I say don't worry about it. Change modes when you want.

Thanks, appreciate the responses. It all makes sense but I was just being overly cautious. I think I'm damaged from hitting the emergency brake instead of the windshield wiper fluid one day like a momo!
