I am thinking about adding ceramic coating/tinting to my R1S windows to cut down on UV and heat. I live in the desert of Southern California. The company I have contacted encouraged me to do the windshield as well, but I’m hesitant to do that. Anyone have any experience with any of this?

Yes, do the windshield! Many have done that, including myself. Make sure you choose a high quality film so you don’t see weird artifacts or hues in the film.

I’ve had good experiences with XPEL, and can’t even tell it’s installed on my windshield. I used 70% on my front windshield - it’s pretty clear even at night, and it provides a good amount of heat rejection. Also, you might want to get 50%, since you live in the desert. I live near the SoCal coast, so it’s much cooler over here during the summer.

I also have XPEL 70% on my windshield and, visually, you would never know it's there. Definitely worth it. I do still use a sun shade when parked. As for 50 vs 70, just be sure to stay within the limits of your local tint laws.

Was on the fence for a while, noticeable difference in heat reduction. Unfortunately a rock hit the windshield exactly one week after having it done, but the crack doesn’t obstruct view. Just going to keep it unless/until it gets worse. The installer did say I may be able to get it covered under insurance but don’t want to mess with it right now.

I did all glass but the roof. The side and back were kept at the same degree as the manufacturer windows for the rear. I did the windshield but at a 100% because I didn't want that ticket at all. Does it help? I guess.

Had it done to both Rivian’s, huge difference. Did all windows in vehicle to take load off the AC, was told doing roof could be hit or miss if panel would crack. Not from heat, but quick changes like a rain shower in afternoon, or car wash so didn’t do it. Well worth the money for the comfort you get driving

I did a high quality ceramic on everything but the roof and I love it. Ceramic is nice because it looks lighter than other non-ceramic films from the inside looking out, but the same from the outside looking in.

windshield: 50%
front driver and passenger: 20%
all other windows -roof: 5%

No issues at night. My wife didn’t even realize I did the windshield until I told her, so that’s a good sign 50% isn’t too dark. Haha.

I have 3M Crystiline 50% on mine and it makes a huge difference. I have done 4 different cars with crystiline I live in Arizona and can park out in the sun and get in and not burn my hands on the steering wheel or seatbelt buckles.

Here a Reddit post I wrote explaining all information you’d need to know for tinting your R1S. I continue to chat with vehicle owners weekly about tint questions and recommendations, all coming from the post below.

https://www.reddit.com/r/TeslaModelY/comments/11qgyvh/all_things_window_tint/

I use Llumar products for my vehicles. From my experience installing film for about 10 years, their products continue to meet and exceed expectations.
You’ll find the recommending I made in that post works great on your R1S.

If you have any questions, please fire away.

Here is:
  • Stratos 50 on windshield
  • Pinnacle 25 on front doors
  • AIR 80 on all rear glass
