I recently installed a Prospeed roof rack on my R1S, and am loving it. Around the same time I found myself collecting some Harbor Freight cargo boxes that were cheap, and stackable, and I thought would make good camping/overlanding storage solutions.
I then realized I might be able to mount them on the roof rack to free some space up inside the vehicle. Since they stack, they have small cavities on each side at the bottom where the clips from the top of a box below can click into in order to securely stack multiple boxes.
Running with that, I prototyped some clips with my 3D printer (white in the attached photo), and once I got them where I wanted had PCB Way CNC and anodize some aluminum versions (from the same 3D model, unchanged).
They arrived yesterday and work quite well (see other attached photos). I slid two cross bars to the right spacing so that I could essentially clamp each case securely using my clips. I was able to physically rock the car by pulling on the box handle without any indication that the box was slipping in the clips, so it feels very secure. While I am doing test drives/trips, I have a safety zip tie securing the handle to the rack just in case something goes wrong with the clips.
I've got some other ideas for things like molle panels which hang down from the rack over the rear windows that I need to start protoyping. If there is interest I'll keep posting as I move through these designs.
Cheers,
Ron
