Hi,
Can the cargo crossbar be installed rotated at 90deg ( parallel to doors) if not in use so that it minimizes wind drag and noise? (similar to subaru Outback )
Thx
Tony.

No. The latches on the bed rail won't allow it. Honestly the wind noise and range hit is nonexistent. The only time I remove mine is when I know I'll need better access to the bed of the truck. (R1T of course)

Even on the roof I have not noticed any efficiency penalty.

They are quick and easy to take off so you could store them in the bed, gear tunnel, backseat or something if you wanted.

Agree with this, I took them off for my trip to service but haven't noticed any meaningful efficiency hit with them on the roof vs off. Even wind noise isn't all that bad with them on unless its a particularly windy day I rarely notice.

I would take them off, when not in use.

I used to have "aerodynamic" cross bars on my XC90 and there was an increased cabin noise and drop in MPG. I did take them on and off as needed.

With R1S, I'm not bothering to order the cross bar as I have so little use for such a thing (I don't surf).

They are noisy on the roof. But I don’t hear them over the bed.

Thx all for the comments. Having them always on the car (and not taking up space in trunk or garage) would have been convenient, but it's not a big deal to remove, I don't use it that often either. It's good to know there's minimal impact on MPG with them on.

Thx
Tony
