Hi, I am seeing all of the posts about the failure of the 12V batteries; has me a bit concerned. Is there a way I (the owner) can run a diagnostic in service mode on the 12Vs that would provide me an indication I can understand so I would know if I need to request a service ticket?

There is a “Ride” menu, sort of diagnostics service screen, you can search this forum for information on it how to get to it and the pin for it.

If I go into it, shows my low voltage battery at 14.1 volts which is in the healthy range of 12.6-14.7 a 12 volt battery would be. I will occasionally go in and look just out of curiosity.

How long can it go below 12.5 before it fails? Since we can't see a log, we can't see progressive decline and predict failure.

I was answering the OP question about a way to run a diagnostic. Looking at this screen shows the volts without needing to get out a volt meter and attaching it to the battery.

I’ve probably looked at mine at least 6 times and have never seen it below 14, if I saw it getting into the low 13s I would probably check it more often, if I saw it in the 12s I would probably schedule a replacement.

Not aware of any diagnostic tool that would give you a detailed log of historical battery voltage. Not saying there is not one out there, these days it is possible there is something you can purchase to install and collect that type of historical data just not sure that is what the OP was asking about.

Checking the voltage like you are is not indicative of battery health at all. When the vehicle is on, the HV battery contactors are closed and voltage is being supplied to the 12v system. The only way to to get an accurate voltage is to read it when the vehicle is asleep, but there is no official way to do that. Several of us have built low-power Wi-Fi battery voltage monitors and log the data continuously, which can potentially give an early warning of impending failure.

I've got one of the R1Ts that have TWO 12v batteries. I've also got a Battery Tender with an OBD plug attachment. Does anyone know if that will maintain BOTH batteries if I hook it through the OBD port??? .....or will I have to open the frunk, pull the cover panel and hook it to BOTH sets of terminals??

Rivian has an algorithm and will alert you through the app when the 12v is getting weak. Based on reports this seems to be pretty effective…though not 100%….at protecting against a bricked truck.

A jump pack can get the truck going again but once you run the 12v flat it can’t be trusted IMO.

I only got my G2 R1S Max less than 4 months ago - about 8,500 miles. About 2 or 3 weeks ago, I told my wife that the Riv quit sleeping all night - roughly an hour on/hour off all night. Then about a week ago, I got the message for a proactive battery change.

My thought is that the Rivian alerted HQ that it was having to wake regularly to keep 12v charged, and they scheduled a replacement based on that.

There's the old saying that correlation is not causation, but seems likely to me. Unless they're replacing everyone's Gen2 in 3.5 months, something triggered it.
