Buying Used 22 R1T - Dealer Extended Warranty Worth It?

First time poster. Stoked to join the community.

Picking up a 2022 R1T Adventure from a local dealership. 15k miles, Warranty started 9/22. I have another 35k miles and 27 months on the original Rivian Warranty. The dealer offered me an extended warranty from Truck Prime (I honestly can't find them on a google search but asked twice and that's what he told me!) for $3,500. The warranty goes until April 2031 (72 months from now) and 90k miles total (75k from now).

I've ALWAYS been hesitant with extended warranties...and particularly in this case since I assume all Rivians need to go to the SCs.

Should I just pocket the $3500 and walk away or should I consider this? It seems really cheap for a TON of extra coverage.

In my experience with extended warranties you need to claw, scratch and bite your way to any coverage. Make sure you have copies of all the paperwork and read all the inclusions, required notifications and exclusions the policy has.

Speaking for myself, that extra BS is never worth it and I’d rather pay out of pocket for repairs. Manufacturer original warranty or get it cheap enough to pay repairs out of pocket, those are the options I exercise.

The fact you cant find anything about the insurer, should be your first (and only) red flag. I have nothing against extended warranties, but if they don't have any sort of online presence, getting anything from them when you inevitably need them sounds like it will be a nightmare.

As Donald said, if you do end up getting one make sure you read everything for them. I am in the same boat as Donald where the hassle is not worth the extra potential money savings to me.

If you are going to get an extended warranty just go with Fidelity Warranty Services.

Or Xcare. That is who I did my warranty through for my Tesla and Rivian. They’ve been good with my Tesla.

Extended warranty sales is a $37 Billion a year market. They are businesses, not charities. They wouldn't sell you an extended warranty for $XX amount of money, unless repairs are expected to cost less than $XX amount of money.

Extended warranties only exist for people who would rather have piece of mind, than they would money.

I just bought a used 22 and I'm happy with the comprehensive warranty. Mine is good till 2028. I'm thinking I wouldn't need any extended on top. But your situation may be different

Personally. I would definitely purchase an extended warranty. I really like my R1T, but I’ve already replaced a drive unit and inverter ($15K per the tech), NFC reader in 6K miles of ownership. I personally wouldn’t own one of these beasts without a warranty. Honestly that applies to almost any new tech forward car.
if $15k is walk around pocket money, none of this applies

The reason companies offer extended warranties is that they think the warranty will cost more than you'd pay in repairs - otherwise they wouldn’t be profitable. Extended warranties are a form of insurance - you don’t buy them to save money (you’re almost guaranteed not to). The only reason to buy them is if you don’t think you could pay a repair bill that the warranty would cover. Most people who can afford the car aren’t in that situation, and it rarely makes sense to buy them.

Just got a quote from them for my r1s. Currently 37,500 miles. My R1s has really no issues for 2 and half year except for those minor body aligment issues that they fixed at the beginning. They quoted 100K / 6 years extra for $6300. How do you like this company? Have you use any warranty service with them? I see that they are from Mckinney which is a plus. Do we just have to bring the rivian to Rivian service center to repair and they would pay the bill?

A little late to the thread... But a extended warranty is only good if you can get the repair done at the dealer that has the ability to actually do the repair.. In this case because there is no aftermarket, and most, if not all, mechanical repair shops are not Rivian certified to get the parts to make the repairs.

So if they will not authorize Rivian to do the repairs, then the warranty is useless.

I am very happy with Xcare and have them with my Tesla as well. I have experience with my Tesla for claims and they've been good. I have other friends who have good luck with their Teslas. You can just take the truck to Rivian to get it repaired under the warranty and they typically would pay directly to Rivian.
