Hi all

Building a new house in Pagosa Springs - breaking ground in May this spring

Currently have planned for (2) L2 chargers in the garage

We currently have solar and batteries in PHX and will plan for future PV in the new house

If you were planning a new house what details would you add around EVs?

Cheers, Andy

A climate-controlled garage is nice to have with my Rivian. I'm not sure this is as big of an issue in Phoenix as it is here, considering it snowed yesterday.

Agreed Donald - building a straw bale home and the garage will be a conditioned space. Our garage in PHX in the summer is over 100F (if I was staying in the valley of the sun I would add a mini-split to the garage)

Net zero home or at least close to it with more insulation and better windows. Also electric everything; heat pump, water heater heat pump, induction cooktop, etc.
Yep - planning HP for hydronic radiant heat (possibly combined for DHW). 2 small mini-splits for cooling if we can't open windows for cooling in the summer (main concern is smoke....). All electric :)

You probably will have it covered when solar/batteries go in, but maybe need to think about bidirectional charging setup. Vehicles as additional battery backup or as main backup.

I think the 2 L2 chargers is a good plan and how you want to park in the garage will dictate where you want your chargers. I have 2 L2 in my garage along with solar as well and it all works great together. Sounds like you got it!

Put the heat pump water heater in the garage - it’ll cool and dehumidify it for free as it makes hot water.

I'd want to put in at least one 100A circuit so you can install an 80A/19.x kW charger.

Rivian can't currently take advantage of that charging rate but I'd want to future proof, especially in a lovely but somewhat isolated place like Pagosa Springs, where your access to fast charging is probably minimal.

If you have a spring/creek/river on your property, hydropower is the way.

For me, a big thing would be the depth of the garage. It looks like you have an R1S, but if you might ever consider an R1T, keep in mind how long it is. It barely fits in a standard 20 ft garage, no room to walk past it in front or behind. I have a 23 ft garage now and can at least walk by in front, but the tailgate is inches from the garage door. It would be nice to have a deeper garage so I could comfortably walk all the way around the truck with the garage door down.
