Gen 2 R1S here. I don't use the brakes very much, but I know exactly what he's talking about in the article. There's a ton of play in the pedal. Almost feels like I have to slam on it hard to get it to brake.

The R1S comes standard with a brake pedal comparable to the ones that are standard in most mini vans. Since the R1S caters to a lot of soccer moms and families who would be buying either another SUV or a mini van, I don't exactly see the pedal travel to be that much of an issue. Most of the buyers probably wouldn't need a pedal from an F1 car.

WIth that said, I'm going to make it a point to push the Rivians brake pedal today and compare it to my brand new PI explorer's pedal. I've been driving it for a week or so and really like the feel of those brakes.

Also, wonder if they made in modifications to the brakes on the Pike's Peak car. I mean, that's about as good of a test for brakes as you can get.

I do find the pedal a bit spongey, I don't think that's an unfair statement. But in the times I've needed to use it - which are NOT on a track, or a skidpad... I've always found the braking I needed. But I would agree that they are soft and not communicative, but as others have said, it's also a 7k lb SUV... I don't expect the brakes here to feel like a GT3 RS. I wish they were a little more firm and grabbed a little higher in the pedal travel, but they certainly do stop the vehicle

Brakes are fine. Actually super easy to lock them up in a panic stop because the car is so heavy and, well, Pirellis. Decker Canyon is a really tight road and low speed. Haven't been through it in decades just for fun.

I've used the brakes maybe a handful of times in over a year of ownership. What a weird subject for Motortrend to focus on

24 R1S here, and I dont use my brake pedal much, but I do make an effort to use it once a week to keep the pads/rotors clean. The brakes on mine are very aggressive, but I do not complain, as they are likely the best brakes I have experienced. Cant say anything about feel thou.
The vehicle uses the brakes a lot more than you'd think. Driver Assistance prioritize the friction brakes and it causes the pads to wear out in about 40-50k miles(Very bad for an electric vehicle)
If you turn off the "brake assist" option in the DA settings, you'll see when you get limited regen. That's when the truck uses the brake pads to stop while brake assist is enabled.

I never charge up to the point of getting limited regen, and have not experience it yet...

You probably enabled brake assist because even charging to 80% will limit regen for the first half mile of the drive. If it’s enabled, you won’t see the limit, it’ll just use friction brakes to compensate for the decrease in regen and you won’t see an indication for it on the gauge cluster.

I almost never use my brake pedal. And during a "panic stop" I push it to the floor. "Extra travel" is irrelevant when it's on the floor.

Sure, if you're the kind of person who regularly racetracks your Rivian, it may be an annoyance. But most people don't. Most people drive them somewhat normally, and with one-pedal-driving, rarely need to touch the brake pedal.

One has to ask then, on the `25+ models with Platform+ have they gone entirely to regen for highway braking. Brake assist is no longer an option (and candidly makes zero sense unless needed "in emergency")

You can check that by gently resting your foot on the brake pedal while on Highway assist and see if the pedal moves when the car has to slow down. I'm pretty sure they still do that.

Great advice...

Road trip over this last weekend, with the brake pedal definitely moving during decel while on assist. Bummer.

Makes sense thinking through it, as the rear motor is decoupled at speed so would be unable regenerate. The Mazdas only use rear brakes in these mild slow down situations to avoid letting the vehicle shift its weight forward. Same effect would occur if we just used heavy front regen only.

Model S never touched brakes, also never ran front motor only. I'd be super curious to understand efficiency penalty if we ran both motors full time.

R1T in 2023 🤞
No clue what he’s talking about. November 23 R1 S.I take my foot off the pedal regen slows down. I push on the break it stops. What else can I say?

Maybe he’s not used to electric vehicles?
I have a 2025 R1S. It is just right for me but I am not racing on the racetrack either. 😊
