Just read the MotorTrend review on the 2025 R1S. They really complained about the brakes on the R1S:

“Subjectively, it gets there unpleasantly; testing director Eric Tingwall notes “the brake pedal has a massive—unacceptable, outrageous, offensive—amount of travel and no real feel to it,” adding that, given “the speed that this vehicle is capable of, it makes for a disconcerting experience both during a panic stop and around the figure eight.” A firmer pedal with a shorter stroke is needed, and likely not something Rivian can fix via an OTA.”

I had not heard this before regarding the R1S and thought I would ask Gen 2 R1S owners their opinions. Thanks.

I barely use the brake on mine anyways and when I do it feels fine. I'm not sure where this guy is coming from unless the one he drove doesn't work like mine or the one I test drove last Thursday that's a gen 2 tri.

24 R1S here, and I dont use my brake pedal much, but I do make an effort to use it once a week to keep the pads/rotors clean. The brakes on mine are very aggressive, but I do not complain, as they are likely the best brakes I have experienced. Cant say anything about feel thou.

You read the article incorrectly. They were referring to the CYBERTRUCK when they said that. They said this about Rivian's braking. "The Rivian is the hypercar of this group. We made stunningly quick progress through Decker Canyon, rocketing from corner to corner and mastering each turn in a way we never imagined a pickup truck could. The steering has great feel, precision, and predictability. The chassis has the poise and control of a ballet dancer. The friction brakes are the best here, which we know because we found ourselves outside the bounds of what the regenerative brake could do—not because there’s a problem with the system but because we were driving so damn fast. One of the judges likened the R1T to a Range Rover Sport SVR, and that’s as good a comparison as any. The Rivian is the best-handling truck here by such a large margin it’s barely a competition. "

Nothing read incorrectly. The article is very clear. Even at the top of the article they have a section listed cons for the R1S that states:
“Brake pedal travel”
As a con.

You must have not read the article all the way through.

Here is the whole quote again. Nothing about the cyber truck in the paragraph.

“Braking is more of a mixed bag. Objectively, the R1S Dual Max stops from 60 mph in an admirable 126 feet (well, admirable for something weighing three tons plus). Subjectively, it gets there unpleasantly; testing director Eric Tingwall notes “the brake pedal has a massive—unacceptable, outrageous, offensive—amount of travel and no real feel to it,” adding that, given “the speed that this vehicle is capable of, it makes for a disconcerting experience both during a panic stop and around the figure eight.” A firmer pedal with a shorter stroke is needed, and likely not something Rivian can fix via an OTA.”

I like my 23 R1S brakes. I’d say there is more travel than most modern cars though. I prefer it this way. Allows better modulation from light to heavy.
I hated my 2020 Subaru. Breath on the brakes and they want to slam.

Guy is expecting a 7000 lbs SUV to brake like a supercar just because it drives like one in other ways. More pedal travel is needed because brake pressures are going to be higher.
