Agree, I think it’s just plain uneven. As I mentioned in my OP, it’s a little questionable that the inner pads also wouldn’t go in with the wear indicators. This means the pads have to be regularly inspected, and the fact that they are on the inside, means wheels need to come off.

Appreciate all the comments, it’s a good discussion and awareness

Awesome but I do not have the confidence to do something like this, happily will pay an expert for their time.

    • I'd always felt my actual brakes could be grippier. Perhaps this is why they didnt feel as grippy

Hope this helps someone.
How does the friction brakes feel now?

I've been thinking of replacing the pads for a grippier set as I'm spoiled with my (very noisy) Carbotech pads I have in my 'fun' car...

Appreciate the confirmation that the front pads are just like any other vehicle—music to my DIY ears! No way I’m paying someone to swap brake pads, haven’t done that in ages… from my 997TT to everything in between.

At 54,500 miles on the R1T, my pad wear is nearly perfect, so who knows when I’ll actually need to change them. Just need someone to confirm the process for the rears, and I’ll be all set!

I did the bedding yesterday. They feel much better.

  • I drive with High Regen, and i believe that uses the friction brakes a bit more
Wouldn’t the high regen setting actually reduce break wear? I do, however, suspect that the brake assist (brake blending) feature, which is selectable but on by default, will increase brake wear. I have been experimenting with leaving that feature turned off.

Off the top of your head, do you know where the brake assist feature is in the settings? I’ll hunt for it if you’re not sure

Systems > Driver Assistance > Regenerative braking assistance

Where I seem to notice this the most difference is during longer descents, when regen has been minimized. With the braking assistance on, it seems to constantly be braking, as indicated by the dash brake light indicator. This was annoying to me and seemed like it would not help with brake longevity.

Thank you! I know I had mine ticked off at one point but with things ever changing after updates, I want to check it again

This was on by default and I had never toggled it off. I believe others on this thread also had it left ON

Cool write up, but you absolutely lost any credibility with the $65 pads...I wouldn't put those on wheelbarrow...
So, what, you’d only opt for the $40 ones? If you check the other options at O’R, those are mid-high in price.
just because they’re “house brand” doesn’t mean they’re made by monkeys.

The effort and time he took to do the write up far outweighs your credibility so far. You want to level up your credibility with some verifiable documented evidence supporting your criticism of the pads he used?

FWIW, since Rivian replaced mine a couple weeks back I've yet to have them stick to my rotors in the garage. I used to think it was my tires sticking to the concrete but realized it was my pads sticking to the rotors. It causes a loud "CLUNK" every morning I pulled out, and I could feel it in the pedal, like a quick jolt. Now it's smooth and just eases out.

OP, did you ever feel a similar stickiness in the mornings?

Yeah I get that a lot. The parking brake sticks to the rotors after you’ve driven through rain and parked the vehicle for some time. The “parking brake” only uses the rear rotors though. Since I haven’t changed the rears, I still get it.

Used to also get it when I had my model S and it was embarrassingly loud on that vehicle.
