Parts: twice what I expected, you can find plenty of "performance" quality pads at half the price
Labor: For a Rivian, I can see just shy of 2 hours. It would take me at least that long DIY. Their labor rates are on par so I'll allow it
Taxes: I hate Seattle...

Thoughts?
Considering that replacing my R1S 12V battery would have cost me $800 + $200 for the tow if it wasn't under warranty, I'd say that's a lot cheaper than I expected.

Not bad honestly for pads at all four corners installed. 20 years ago Volvo dealers wanted to charge me $750 for front pads & rotors.

If they were doing rotors too, I would expect that to be 1500 to 2000.

You could probably get it done for less than an independent shop, but at this point, it’s really not worth it in my opinion to save a few dollars because you could wind up with more headache headaches taking it somewhere that doesn’t have a lot of experience with the Rivian.

Parts price actually isn't bad considering the performance vehicle it is. The pads for my former Corvette were around this price. Real question is whether or not Rivian will sell the parts direct to the consumer if I'm going to be forced to use Rivian service when the time comes. So far at 30k miles my truck isn't showing any significant wear, even on the rears that some have noted from the parking brake servo dragging the pads.

I'm at 68,000 miles and have gone through 3 sets of pads. All with uneven wear.
That's not normal unless you are doing heavy duty stuff like towing. If it were my vehicle I would be raising hell until they fixed the problem. I see in another post that you live in a mountainous area. That could be it too. But if it's been uneven every time that means the caliper isn't applying pressure evenly to both sides of the rotor.

learn how to drive an electric vehicle. how did you use the brakes enough to need to replace them. use high re-gen my friend, and you don't need to use brakes at all except emergency stopping.
i think in nearly 2 years i can still count on hands and feet how many times i have actually had to use them....

1. My service request is more related to brake fluid flush recommended at 3 year mark. I'm at 57k miles so it very likely needs it.
2. Outer pads are fat and evenly worn, only inner pads show wear, and it's uneven.

What are these “brake pads” of which you speak?

Are you saying the inner pads aren't worn evenly flat (parallel to the backing plate)? That is definitely something wrong with the calipers. Too bad it's out of warranty now...

Not caliper issue, it's the ungreased pins on early builds. Caliper retracts, pad doesn't slide back all the way or evenly.

I've got about 2k miles left and wanted to get this in before it ran out for that reason. If they'll warranty it, great. If they baulk and don't wanna make a deal, I'll DIY.

This interesting info. How early are we talking? Just 2022's or 2023's in there as well? Is there a thread on the ungreased pins on the early builds?

Looking back, to 7 months ago, it seems mostly 2022 builds complaining. Whether it's software function of when to apply friction brakes or just early builds / higher mileage folks hitting the threshold is debatable. Either way, I'm feeling better about declining brake service and DIY it. Mostly I want to ensure the pins and ears are greased properly to prevent future uneven wear.

That’s actually not bad, and in line with other manufacturers. The labor is also about right with shop fees. This is less than BMW would charge for an OEM pad install on an X5.

I’m guessing here, but the pads are probably Brembo OEM, and historically they carry a higher price than aftermarket like Hawk or your run of the mill NAPA/Oreillys/Autozone house pad.

Given how infrequently the brakes are used and how heavy the Rivian is, this is one vehicle where I’d probably go with the OEM pad compound. A ceramic might leave you with pretty sketch brakes after a few hundred miles of non use due to the lack of cleaning effect (that you’d get with a semi metallic compound).

The pads are standard 1405 in the front and 2174 in the back. Cadi, Corvette, jeep and dodge all use this pad. Pick your poison but I prefer power stop brand. Brembo pads are ok but wear quick. They are a consumable of course but power stops don't have that draw back while having other good traits for the street. Brembo rotors are good quality. We likely have Brembo blanks. Again I like power stop drilled rotors. Their blank is super quality as well. Definitely use caliper grease on all sliding parts to prevent binding. Stay away from auto store raybestos Wagner Chinese crap where the rotors are cheap castings with uneven material content that wears bad. Good stuff doesn't cost much more.

Toyota's are really bad with binding issues and then the pads wear uneven and shudder. I found that Toyota only installs one retraction spring for the leading side. Since pads come with new ones, I install the old springs in the trailing side and it helps a bunch keeping things wearing even.

Dealer charges $1000 a corner for my Audi with rotors. Luckily I have the diagnostic software to also retract the electric parking brake and diy.
