Hey guys, on the lookout for one of these but have no idea which ones are more reliable. Early VINS or latter?
Thank you all and trying to get some information before placing an order. Would you guys prefer local dealerships or ordering directly from Rivian? I don't like to deal with salesman PERIOD. Thanks again!

I bought my R1S in Sept. 2023 from the "store." It was almost exactly what I had reserved, and I have been totally satisfied. No issues at all. VIN is 18xxx.

I wouldn't buy from dealers personally... they likely don't know anything about Rivians, and they'd a good chance all the little extras like the camp speaker, air compressor hose kit, first aid kit, 120v charge cable, and flashlight will be missing. If you are going for that kind of purchase, I'd rather go straight to rivian.
I bought mine off autotrader and had a great experience. (Your results may vary) i was looking for green on green, which was hard to find. I hired an auto broker to help me locate one.

Mine was built March 2023. It has the updated suspension. The earlier ones have the Meridian sound system which many consider best. Mine has its replacement. Both are good and you might prefer one over the other depending on music type. I'd suggest mid March or later even if you lose the Merdian and the suspension is clearly better and there were running tweaks like all companies do that may not be formally listed but you can feel/hear.

Personally, I vote for a dealer even though they are a PITA at times. If I had bought a similar truck from Rivian last year, I'd have paid at least 11k more for a truck with more miles (6k on mine) from them. Or about 15k for a truck with between 600-3k total miles. That doesn't count the additional sales tax on the difference either, and with states that base your registration fee on the purchase price of the truck, it could cost you a lot more over the term of your ownership in additional licensing fees.

My truck came with everything it was supposed to have. It was all there. I was able to negotiate the sales price down from their original asking price as well.

Here is what I did with my savings.
  • Full truck PPF
  • Ten-year 175k-mile extended warranty
  • Autofit Pro topper on a group buy
  • Paid a little bit of money toward my forged Atomic AW01 Wheels

With only 6k miles on it was still pretty new and only been in service for just under a year. I got the balance of the 5/60 8/175k factory warranty that the quads come with. Or looking at it another way, I had 49 months and 54k miles of bumper to bumper warranty and 85 months and 169k miles of powertrain and battery warranty left.

Why would I overpay Rivian for the same truck for such little benefit? My truck was new enough that it qualified for new car financing through Navy Federal at a low 4% rate.

Rivians built before IIRC March of 2023 had two 12 volt batts, try for something built after March 2023 so you only have to replace one 12 volt battery when it dies.

They changed the welded subframe to cast somewhere in early 2023 from what I can tell.

I used Xcare to get the extended warranty. You can only find it if your truck has under 10,000 miles. Mine is now covered until 2034 and 184k miles.

If you have higher miles, 10yr 125k is about the best I've seen with them.

first off thank you guys for the input and taking the time of your day (or night) to reply. I did not know that the 2023 had revisions such as dual 12V and suspension updates? Why do we need 2 12V? do they account for 12V (high storage AH?) or 24V? Most of the pre-owned I've looked at are 2022 with relatively low mileage. There are some with barely about 15-25k miles with reasonable prices. I guess those are the off leased returns. That is why you don't see as much 2023 ones. I don't mind paying the extra for a 2023 if that's the case. The 2023's VIN is in the 25xxx so I think we're good on the updates? But that's from a local dealer :( Any tips for haggling? Thanks guys!

That VIN should have the suspension updates. Rivian does like Tesla and incorporates continual refinement that doesn't always align with model year updates.

I'd suggest using Autotempest to help you search. I set up a quick search for you based around LA (500 miles) for R1T's with less than 15k miles. Easy to edit as needed. It is a great search aggregator. It saved me thousands on my truck.

Thank you so much @DayTripping ! I'm on it! Wish me luck!
I will also be trading in my Tesla (not due to political reasons) to help offset some of the payment.

I bought a pre-owned 22 R1T LE, VIN 6xxx. It had 9k miles when i bought it a year and a half ago. It has the dual 12v's (not replaced as of yet and thus far have given me no issues), the welded subframe (that was replaced by Rivian), power tonneau cover (that was replaced by Rivian). It also had the cracked HVAC box (replaced by Rivian along with the front carpets). It has the outlet in the frunk, under the dash, Meridian sound system, and the wood (not plastic) accents behind the driver/passenger seats. I love the truck and have had no issues with Rivian replacing anything that needed it (and I've paid $0). I understand that may sound like a lot to take on, which I don't disagree with, but for me I am happy with the truck and have had no issues since Rivian fixed all the above.

Good luck. It might help to broaden your search range as vehicles seem to be priced higher in California.

I don't care about politics. I am only giving up my Teslas when they dead or I find something better. If I could only keep 1 of my cars/trucks it would be my Plaid hands down. My R1T is in second place but could move up if it didn't have so much wind noise. And was almost as quick. And was more efficient. And ...

Thanks @DayTripping ! I just feel that I need to have a vehicle that can store and carry a lot of my stuff when I'm out compared to a regular sporty 4-door sedan. The R1T prices are about the Plaid's! What made you love your Plaid (Model S I assume?) more than your truck? Next to it being almost the fastest car on the road most of the time!

The feeling of being catapulted at any speed never gets old for me. Even at a low charge level it is still crazy fast. The hatchback is very versatile too and even more when I fold down the seats. I have the track pack brakes so they raised the speed limiter to 202-203. The brakes are even better than the acceleration. I have wide sticky tires (P4s 295/35/20 all around) so it goes around turns like it is on rails but with a hit to efficiency. I don't care about the efficiency that much.

I made a trip last weekend and even with some high speed running (75% of max speed) I still averaged 340 wH/mi (2.94 mpk) for the entire trip. I can spend less time charging and more time driving when on a trip.

It is very quiet at speed compared to Rivians. I was running at 100 and the noise level at that speed is quieter than a Rivian at 60. According to my Apple Watch, it was 59 DB at 100. My Rivian is in the 60's around 70 mph which is a big difference. No wind buffeting of the car.

Factor in how well FSD has gotten and there is a lot to like about it. I really like my Rivian but as much as people complain about Tesla's QC, my Plaid was put together far better than my Rivian. I like my Rivian but I enjoy my Plaid more. The Rivian does have greater versatility though and that was one of the reasons I bought it. Still quick, handles pretty well, nice interior. good ride quality and overall fairly fun to drive.

I have an early '23 R1T Quad motor. If you want the Meridian Speakers, you want a VIN less than PN19000. But that comes with some trade offs.

My vin is 189XX and has the Meridian speakers, but didn't have the improved Jounce lines (hydraulic sway bar/damper linking) nor did it have the cast front subframe. I've since had both retrofitted to my '23 Rivian. One was a customer satisfaction campaign, the other had a weld fatigue and was replaced with a Gen 2 Cast subframe.

If you go with this VIN range, you'll have a 12v plug in under the dash, but not in the frunk like some 2022 models. It will also have x2 12v batteries compared to later models which used a single battery and a capacitor in place of the second.

To live with for the last 2 years, has been great. For us as a family of 3, the T with the gear tunnel has been perfect, for all the things we've thrown at it and into it.
