Hello,

I purchased my R1S about a month ago and had my electrician put in the Tesla universal wall charger on a 60a circuit but it only outputs 48a. I’m having my house electricity redone and brining in a 400a main breaker so I can improve the ev charging and update a few other things. With that much extra power what is the best wall charger you can buy so I can decrease the amount of time to charge?

There are ones out there but not cheap and may require 3 phase power.

I’ve never not found charging on L2 to be an issue even at 40 amps you can get over 100 miles in 5 hours.

Do a Google Search for Home DC Fast Charger and you will see some options.

Do you have three phase service at your house?

Not mandatory but if you’re gonna pay for an actual high-speed DC charger, the split phase just aren’t worth it.

What kind of power are you getting from your utility? L3 chargers are typically commercial applications as you need a large enough electrical utility feed to support the load.

L3 charging is DC fast charging. Typically 480V with a 200A feed.

I'm sure it can be done. But, it would not be something that's considered 'typical'.

Thank you for your input and guidance. It seems like home DC fast charging is something that is unlikely to be feasible for a while. I was just looking to decrease the charge time but I guess I have the best that’s available, thank you

If you’re going to be DC fast charging at home because you drive so much, an EV may not be the best choice of vehicle for you.

Or a smaller battery EV, which takes less time to charge.

If there’s an L3 charger near your place, that might be good enough for the occasional fast charging you need. If it’s too inconvenient or you need it daily, then maybe an EV isn’t for you.

For safety reasons, your circuit output of 48A is correct: the National Electrical Code (NEC) “80% rule” for EV charging requires your charger uses no more than 80% of the capacity of the circuit it is attached to.

L3 charging causes more battery stress and degradation. Your electrician can prob confirm that L2 provides a lot of flexibility, esp with a charger that has adjustable output - I have an Emporia, and it is stellar. Have heard that Grizzl-E models are also very high-performing.

I understand that the electrical codes would prevent 480-volt service to residential, but I see the Terra unit can support 22.5 kW if supplied with a single-phase 240-volt, 100-amp input. Level 2 chargers range from 3 to 18 kW, and commercial level 3 chargers 50 to 400 kW, according to this link https://electricvehiclegeek.com/level-2-ev-charging/

So, home DC charging seems like it would not add any value. Thoughts?
