Bed mounted vs hitch mounted bike rack?

I’m surprised so many folks use racks - I’ve found a tailgate pad to work very well and it’s lockable with the gear cable.

Agreed. I haven't used my Kuat hitch mounted rack since I got the tailgate pad. If we were doing a multi-day camping trip and bringing bikes with us, they I'd probably opt for the hitch to have the bed storage, but otherwise, Rivian tailgate pad for the win.

We use the Kuat Pivot Swing Away paired with the Kuat NV 2.0 2 bike hitch and occasionally add the 2 bike add on for more capacity. The Swing Away gets the rack out of the way of the tailgate for easy access to the bed. We've driven thousands of miles with this setup.

I really like the Yakima FrontLoader rack mounted on the Rivian crossbars. It's super stable. This is a large frame 29'r bike and it fits perfectly. I have about a 1" space from my roof/rear window spoiler to the front tire.

im curious - what did you do to adapt the Thule Big Mouth to fit the Rivian. Ross bars? Is there an adapter on the market?

I have locking Thule Big mouths and like them. Was disappointed when I learned they don’t fit the rivian cross bars.

Following up on my note above for those with a Thule Big Mouth bike rack :
Thule does make an adapter kit which works great

The other racks folks posted look great, but I didn’t want to spend a bunch of money when I already have the Thule racks.

This adapter set will also work well for the other Thule products I have
