What’s your fast charge battery preconditioning high scores? 😜
Hit 264° tonight! Actually first time trying L3 charging at RAN. And my credit card got charged for it for some reason even though I should have the free 6 months from referral.

My name is Mike, and I have a (car) problem
Huh - are they running the Bosch motors in the rear on the Tri-motor trucks?

Is it not normal for the motors to get up to ~260° for battery preconditioning?

Sorry - didn't mean to alarm you.

My G1 Quad Motor heats up to around that level during preconditioning, but it's all four motors. Seeing it just in the rears on your truck suggests to me that the Tri is using the same motors for the rear as the Gen1 quads.

The G1 Quad trucks have Bosch motors, and they're water-jacketed, so the motor temp has to get really high to heat the fluid which is then transferred to the pack.

Seeing your front motor at 100 degrees in contrast to the rears is what grabbed my attention. I thought the G2 Tri motor trucks were using all-Rivian motors, not the Bosch units.

You won’t actually get charged, your cc is pinged and then it goes away while pending. I had the exact same experience and messaged them while I was sitting there, but I’ve used it 3-4 times now and each time I get an email showing $0 and no processed charge on my cc

Holy ... why would this be necessary whatsoever on the Rivian built motors?! I thought only Bosch had to replicate the surface of the sun to warm the battery??

All three are in house motors with the same cooling (oil bathed, rather than Bosch jacket cooled)

I haven't driven a Tri yet, but there's no way this expected right? I've never seen my duals get anywhere close to this when warming the battery.

Does it heat the battery quicker at 250 degrees? Sure. Do you have to burn half the battery's capacity to those temps up get there, and another half cooling them back down after you charge? Probably.

We as in this forum and the other platforms, don't have enough data on how the trimotor dual rear Ascent motors function for battery conditioning even when compared to Enduro or Bosch motors. The tri is an Enduro front and Ascent rear IIRC.

Watching the Ascent Quad do Pikes Peak this year, the motors stayed in a very nominal temp range, it was the battery cooling which ended up being the Achilles heal this round.

Gen1 Quad uses a boatload of motor heat to warm the battery in the middle of winter while preconditioning to a charger.

I know this is an intended design… but this can’t be great for long term viability for the motor(s) internals and lifespan… Unless absolutely necessary I’ve been selecting a parking lot or neighboring business to route to instead; but obviously this is drastically different for me here in TN vs those farther north.

Reading this just reminded me of our last long trip where the Rivian nav routed us to a RAN to charge about halfway to our destination (and the same coming home) and it never preconditioned the battery. Has anyone else noticed that their battery preconditioning isn't working? I wish we had a simple button that we could press 5-10 minutes in advance to manually initiate preconditioning. Pipe dreams...

Two hundred eighty degrees is nothing for the all-metal internals of a motor. I'm sure those seals are rated to handle that temperature as it's not a big ask. Compare that to the temps inside an ICE engine.

Battery won't always precondition, only to get the batteries to a point where they are safe to DCFC and charge at an optimal rate. If the truck decides the battery temps are good enough, good enough they stay.

This usually happens to me when they're around 80 degrees.
