I know the AutoSocks work; they got me home in an ice storm last January in my Model Y. I had just a single pair and placed them on the rear wheels. This was an all-wheel drive MYLR.

if I get these for the R1S Quad, could I get away with just a single pair and if so, would it be best to place them on the front or rear? Then if you tell me to place them on the front, would the logical conclusion be to use Conserve drive mode to power only the front wheels?

It's really a toss up IMO as to front or rear when having only one pair of "chains". For every person who says rear, someone else will say front.

I would never use conserve for 2WD front only. I can't think of a good reason to do that, but plenty of good reasons to use 4WD.

Spikes-Spiders don't take up much space, but they impair R1s' steering when placed in front.

So we can only put Spikes-Spider traction devices on the rear tires, where they seem safe (even though Rivian cautions against them).

We're hoping to buy socks, but haven't done it yet.

Went skiing last month in Mammoth Lakes, CA and a sizable snowstorm came while we were there. Went into town and only option they had in stock that was "recommended" to be compatible with 22" tires on our R1S Quad were the tire socks. They were easy to put on (rear wheels) and worked like a charm. We drove around town care-free for the rest of our trip without a single issue. I have to say we were all pleasantly surprised...and without the hassle, mess, potential damage from traditional chains. I would recommend them without hesitation.

PS: Drove with car in "Snow Mode" the entire time until we left town and no snow on the road.

Dave, do we know the Spikes Spider that is right for the 21" Rivian? I have a set of Easy Alpine Pro 3, that are now called Easy Alpine Pro 5. Do you know if the fit the rivian 21" ?

I don't know, @Greg Chick, but I know whom you should ask.

The Spikes-Spider representative for North America is Scott Meyer in El Dorado KS [pronounced "ell dor-RAY-doh", outside Wichita], (316) 321-2400 or (800) 227-5260. I was Scott's first (and maybe only) Rivian customer, so he will remember me well. Use my name.

If you're using 275/55R21 tires, that's within 0.3% of the diameter of the 275/50R22 tires that Scott sold me Spikes-Spiders for.

Please remind Scott that Rivians have a five-lug-nut pattern, not six. So you'll need to replace or augment all five lug nuts in order to mount Spikes-Spider base plates symmetrically.

Very best wishes! Please let us know what you find out!

Dave,
I talked to Scott, the #5 is required, I have a set that I had for my Acura 19", but that is not big enough, so it is $720 for a set. He remembered you and the set you bought. I bought 2 sets from him a while back, but too small. I am going to sell the one set I still have before buying another. Anyone want a set for 19" ?

Just for reference, as long as we're talking about them ...

I bought the AutoSock size AL69 for my Gen1 R1T Quad with 20" wheels.
They fit (I tested), but I haven't had a need to use them yet.
However, they satisfy the requirements around here that (sometimes) chains must be carried.
They are compact and light weight and don't take up any significant room.

I'm glad I have them in case I get stuck, but if the snow is really bad I just stay off the roads.

If you buy them in spring, you can find some killer sales and get them at half price while they last. Still not cheap, but not ridiculously expensive like they are right now.

Ah. which ones did you get? I have the 20" AT and feels like its going to rip through it....
Actually, I've been in a lot of the Mammoth record storms and not too long ago the 2023 Lake Arrowhead storm and never felt the need for chains unless it was R1 restriction. Had a 2020 RRS HSE at that time and the Pirelli Scorpion Zeroes performed well even with 6/32 tread. Recently took it to Mammoth for New Years Weekend and did great over there as well. I bet you paid a huge premium for those socks in Mammoth.
I recall back in the days my parents always bought chains at Mammoth for like $200+ and when I grew up and needed chains I was surprised even 10-15 years later, they were only low $100's for the Super Z's.

I got EASYSOX which comes in many, many sizes - the shop had a designated size based on automobile and tire size. Mine was for Tire 275/50/R22. They were over $100 cheaper than the recommended low-profile "chain" for same tire at same shop.
Other 'discovery' having not thought about it previous to this snow experience was to switch to Regen setting to "LOW" because when I first rolled into town and was pulling into a parking space with ice/snow on the ground, just taking my foot off the throttle on "high" setting the car slid for a bit which obviously in a ICE would do no such thing....anyhow, first EV and first experience in snow with it after 9 months - livin' and learning' :)

Yea thats the first thing I do with an EV in the snow. I turn off Regen. Unfortunately, you can only put it on low and that can still cause you to skid when you're not careful. Same thing in the rain, turn off regen or keep it on low to prevent hydroplaning. It's a 7000 lb vehicle, but it can still hydroplane if you're not careful.
