So now that we have 100 votes, I have come to the conclusion that many of my Rivianites bought in above $35. I will need re-evaluate my exit price or keep 1/3 of my position to ride and die. It will be an exciting ride regardless ?
I can’t fathom why anyone who bought at that much higher prices still hold those shares. Sell, take the tax loss, & rebuy the stock (in 30 days). You’re no worse off & you lower your taxes. Win, win.

At $100+, I basically double my money. At any of the other choices, I still lose money. That said, I'm in it for the long haul, but would most likely sell between $50 and $100.

I got in right around $50 and had planned from day one to sit on that initial investment for five to ten years. But five years as an absolute minimum. Sinkng stock prices suck, but I don't really worry about it. Unless Rivian goes under, their stock price will increase over time.

I lot of folks don't understand the value of harvesting losses, particularly on a stock like this that tends to stay in relatively narrow price channels for extended periods of time (i.e., your risk is minimal that you will miss a big run-up during the 30-day period while you're waiting out the wash sale rule).

I think you're are being too presumptuous.

Many people DO understand loss harvesting to offset gains to lower taxes.

The question wasn't that. Question was at what price would you exit. Different question.

Without knowing individual gain/loss position for the year, no assumptions can be made about how viable loss harvesting is.

I have 300 shares at $49. Originally I bought in a $97 and sold at ~$145. I got about $7000 pretax from that initial run but now I’m down about $10700 total. I’ve pretty much written it off that stock. I’m doing really well right now with my other investments so I may sell my RIVN shares to help reduce capital gains taxes on my other investments when I sell them. I still need to discuss it with my tax advisor.

I’m being very cautious about buying in again. I do kick myself for not buying at $8.26 but RIVN is going to be very volatile for a good long while.

The question is limited to $, but people buy and sell on feelings that may reflect situational and more complex issues.
If the stock I bought became enough to buy a new Rivian, or when it gets there, I may consider that a buy, not a sell.

So, the question is also a buy vs sell question as well as a dollar one.?
Balancing greed with fear is my mantra. My fear has kept me from getting too greedy.

Don’t fret about missing out buying under $10. At least you got out from the $97 purchase. I bet you there’s a ton of Rivian followers that are still holding onto shares from the special pre-IPO or at even higher cost. Someone bought your stock at $145.
