I've never been enticed by the 20" AT Black wheels. They look so dull in the configurator.

Consider the following three screenshots, taken on March 21, 2022. Notice how the wheels look matte, almost like they are made of felt or have a fuzzy finish that absorbs all light.

BUT THIS IS NOT WHAT YOU SEE IN GOOD PHOTOS...

Check out the following two shots. The first is a glamor photo from Rivian from some years ago. The second is someone's photoshop effort from years ago. In both cases notice the wheels.

THESE WHEELS ARE SHINY!

That got me looking at current photos of the black 20" AT's. Lo and behold, they shine like mirrors!

The configurator wheels look entirely incorrect for this option. Having seen the photos I'm certainly considering them now!

Having seen them in person, they are very shiny. I really like them and they look particularly great with the Rivian Blue.

The flat faces are actually a black chrome type finish, not even your typical gloss black. Incredible wheels, I've loved them since they were revealed.

To be fair, even the body paint reflectivity is much much lower in the configurator vs. real life. Those renders could pass off as a satin finish vs. gloss. So I don't think this is a problem exclusive to the 20" darks. They just need better renderings in the configurator for everything.

That being said, the 20" darks are definitely my favorite wheel. That black chrome adds so much depth to the wheel. I just can't bring myself to drop an extra $3.5k on them when the regular and bright 20s are included for free.

I have switched to these after seeing more pics. They were not on my radar at all based on the configurator.

It’s a rendering, an approximate representation only . I wouldn’t put too much stock in it. Easy enough to see actual pictures on rivian’s own website.

Powder coating will get us the configurator version, not the real life version with the dark mirror chrome / gloss black combo :D. But yes, that is an option to consider.

you cant rely on the configurator for final representation. even now.

you'd think they would have updated it by now but nope.

i know they are busy with production and delivery but im pretty sure if they had a dedicated web/graphic design team that owns it it should have been updated. which means, maybe they outsource that part of the website. then i can see how that hasn't been a priority, though i still think thats a mistake.

You can’t rely on any computer generated image or even digital photograph with unknown white balance on an uncalibrated display in uncalibrated ambient light. For any company’s configurator.

Plastidip for even less, lol. Honestly surprised by how well it works on my Bolt, but would probably spend the $ to do it right on the Rivian.

It should be pointed out that the styling of the 20" bright/dark wheel is also different than the regular 20" wheel

They do look good right after a wash!

Problem is, they'll lose that mirror finish after about 10 seconds of exposure to any dirt road, city traffic, pollen, or pretty much anything else including staring at them for too long! ?

I missed the cutoff for Launch Edition, so I’m in for $1500 anyway for the AT 20’s. Another $2K is steep, but they sure look good. Let’s see how my portfolio does between now and the order cutoff day.
