Can the rear hatch be closed manually?

Rather, should it be? When asking at the Venice, California hub, they didn't know but they felt because there was a lot of resistance, you should NOT manually open/close the hatch. I did move it a few inches manually, but there was a lot of resistance so I stopped.

Asking because would like to know if it is possible to manually close the hatch with the liftgate down (to carry something long sticking out). I know the auto-close will not work if the liftgate is down.

@shamoo - can you define you use of hatch and liftgate here? The R1S has a split rear with a small tailgate and a large liftgate. The liftgate can definitely be operated pseudo-manually just but pushing hard enough to get the automatic mechanism to release. The only caveat is that it will store the location where it turned over control to manual as a max/min for the automatic operation until you do a complete open and close cycle on the center display

Hatch = the trunk/section with glass/part that goes up.
Liftgate = the small piece that folds down

That's interesting, so you CAN move the "trunk" manually. The resistance I experienced was much firmer than other electronically actuated trunks so I was hesitant to keep moving it.

So that being said, are you able to leave the rear liftgate folded down and manually close the hatch/trunk all the way? Leaving a small space where some long pieces of wood can stick out.

For example, this is not my car but I used to have an X5(M) and I could do this. Can the Rivian R1S do this too?

@shamoo - ok, it was just a taxonomy issue. The liftgate is the part that goes up. The tailgate is the part that goes down.

So, yes, the liftgate can be operated manually if you override the pressure. The tailgate is always manual.

Absolutely 100%. Glad every day I stuck with it and waited versus getting an R1T sooner. It just fits my needs and lifestyle better.

In standard ride height, it's 78" above the ground.

How much storage space with 3rd row up? Does the cargo cover still work with the 3rd row up?

In terms of the cargo cover, there are notches in the side walls for positions behind both the 2nd and 3rd row so it works with either.
