Interesting. I have been researching on getting an R1S and was literally just looking to see if their 12v battery is a lithium ion battery like in my Model Y.

I was hoping Rivian had the same approach as Tesla with this. I wonder why the article didn’t discuss how Tesla has solved this issue with the 12v battery by going away from traditional 12v batteries.

Is the 12v battery an issue with the R1S?

They changed how the 12v system works entirely for the 2025 model year, and so far it's looking good

My Gen1 R1T has been sitting idle for almost a month waiting on a mobile tech for a 12V replacement. The service advisor on the chat said I could continue to use it but I don’t believe her lies. I’ve been stranded by a dead EV 12V before and don’t want to repeat that.

Gen2 still uses a 12V battery but they stick it under the front passenger seat.
You have to unbolt the seat to get to it ?

Did anyone catch this part of the article?

"Rivian's newer R1 seems to have solved the issue with a trickle-charging approach that no longer energizes the entire car just to charge the 12-volt battery."

I'd love to know more about this but I can't find any literature online about this new design.

Can anyone elaborate on how the new system works?
