Are there trucks much louder than the SUVs?

Every time I get a 2022 R1T quad loaner, I noticed the whirling sound from the battery is a lot louder than my current 2024 R1S quad. Is this a truck thing or a year thing?

Did they just improve it as time went on and made it quieter? Haven’t driven a 2022 R1S to compare the sound to mine.

Maybe a contrary to people here, I have the truck and had the R1S as a loaner once, whilst my truck was getting some items fixed. Maybe it was just me, but I definitely felt the sound resonated more in the R1S than what it does in mine - mind, I somewhat also put it down to being a quad whereas I only have the dual?

Whining sound from the BATTERY??

Motors whine, not the battery. 2022 has Bosch motors, 2024 likely has Rivian motors.

Our 2023 R1T quad large (Bosch motors) has no motor whine at all.

Our 2023 R1S dual max (Rivian's Enduro motors) has a fair amount of whine when accelerating or decelerating in the 0-40 mph range. This seems no worse at 23K miles than it did when new. Portland (OR) Service Center says this is about how the Enduro motors sound.

It seems plausible that the R1S' acoustics could make the noise seem louder. I don't have a dual-motor R1T for comparison, so I can't comment directly.

I suspect the Enduro motors will still be powering the vehicle (and still whining) after hundreds of thousands of miles, if the other components last that long. I'm not worried.

I hope this helps!

I had a similar experience with a loaner R1S quad recently. The difference between the quad S and my PDM R1T was small, but audible.

I thought the R1T was a lot louder when the one I was in had off-road tires. I recently was in an R1S with off-road tires and now believe it to be the tires that make the difference. Even more off a difference now that I have the Michelin Defender 22s on my R1S.

I can't hear much of anything over the drone of those awful Pirelli ATs....and the occasional symphony that's a rattle in both rear door handles somewhere...

I haven’t actually ridden in a Rivian yet, (contemplating a move once my Mach-e is out of battery warranty) but I kind of like a little motor whine. Reminds me it is doing something.

From what I can recall from driving my 2024 R1S Quad last year, there was a somewhat faint whining noise coming from the motors, and I actually like it or else not mind it at all.

I’ve grown attached to the sound of the motors spinning up. I would miss the sound if more sound insulation was added.

I was going to post something similar, only a lot more snarky. Read: Changed my mind.
