I am happy Rivian added the Youtube streaming capability to the cars. But is there any way to turn it off? My kids are addicted to that screen whenever we make a stop somewhere or have to wait for anything.

I had a similar issue roughly 20 years ago when we bought a minivan with a DVD player (remember those?). Our "rule" (which we strictly enforced) was that movies were for long road trips (over an hour) and we would NOT turn it on when we were driving around town. Oh - we had the usual complaints, but they died out when we stuck to our guns. Establish, and enforce, a set of guidelines when YouTube is permitted and make sure consequences of whining or complaining (or touching the screen) are clear.

Yes - we're tough parents, but we're ALL much happier for it. Another example...We have a "3 bites" rule with any food we serve at the table. You don't have to like it, but you do have to take 3 reasonable-sized bites each time it's served. If you complain it's 6 bites. It works for us and our children have found that, over time, they actually like things that they didn't like at first (like pesto) because they're trying them each time they're served.

I thought you can still view videos even without logging in. Let me double check when I get the car back.

Haha, I have to say my kids are suddenly much more interested in staying in the car these days for this reason! It’s either that or they try to get on the Rivian wifi from the house as it doesn't have any content blocking.

You could always just say No? Do your kids not take no for an answer?

My name is Mike, and I have a (car) problem
I have kids, and I would burn the truck to the ground if they acted like that. I also love backseat parenting. Hence, here are several terrible options:

1) "Kids, turns out YouTube is owned by a child smuggling ring and they are watching you when you watch it in the car - don't do it, and if you do, please make sure you lock your bedroom doors at night"
2) Tell them that YT is broken and only plays Baby Shark on repeat and will get stuck on all available media (Tidal, Apple Music, etc) if you even -touch- the button
3) "The truck just came back from the shop and they said if we use the YT app, it'll brick - please don't bankrupt us by using the app, because we're going to the Bahamas this summer without you and need the money for that trip"
4) "Every time you watch a YT video in the truck a baby seal is clubbed to death"

Oh, the fun I would have.

It's always frustrating with a post like this that people want to chime in with opinions about how to raise kids and whatnot.

It's a very simple ask and it absolutely makes sense. There is no upside for Rivian to keep YT available, they aren't making any money from it, so why would Rivian not want to give their customers the option to remove or disable apps? (We have that option on our smartphones. We don't want YT, we delete it.)

If you aren't a parent, then please don't chime in. You don't understand. It is a huge frustration with Rivian and Tesla, that YT can't be removed or disabled for kids. We shouldn't have to resort to some of the suggestions on this thread. It's a very simple solution.

Rivian, please read this/hear this and take heed.

With Tesla, you can disable the controls for the rear screen so kids can't play media.

On Rivian, you can only play media on the front screen. Is that a deterrent already as children aren't typically in the front seat?

My son asks for it all the time too but he's in the backseat in a child seat. Too bad, so sad. :p
