After many months of waiting I recently got contacted that I could place an order. There's all these rumors about the Q2 refresh. After waiting for more than a year, I can sure wait a few more months. Now... Rivian (to the best of my knowledge), has only announced cost saving measures for Q2. If it's only that... there's no real point in waiting from my perspective... I keep thinking that they'll do more than just cost saving changes though..

I intend to keep the Rivian for many years. I have FOMO now, but I rather have it now than for years to come when I see updated Rivians.

Anyway, I'm torn. Any thoughts?

I have two thoughts on this:

1.) Whether you pull the trigger now, or elect to wait a while, the good news is whichever Rivian you purchase is going to be an awesome vehicle that you will enjoy immediately, and for many years to come.

2.) The R2 launch is less than a month away, and the reveal is an ideal platform for Rivian to disclose any details about a potential R1 mid-cycle refresh. It's the perfect opportunity for Rivian to have a "one more thing" moment.

If I were in your shoes, I would wait until the R2 reveal to see if Rivian announces anything about a R1 refresh, and then make your decision and don't look back.

I pre-ordered Q4 R1S (leaning towards Limestone w/FE & 21" tires) 5Jan. I'm in no rush to confirm my order as I'm hoping Rivian will add a Valet Mode(software update, so not a showstopper) and address the hit or miss wireless charger. At close to $100k, I shouldn't need to buy an after-market device. Nevertheless, I love everything else about this vehicle & am looking forward to my eventual 'delivery day'.

This will be my 1st EV, so I'm learning a lot about what to expect from your stories/experiences.

Only guarantee in life is death and taxes.

life is too short to miss out on the joys of driving and owning a Rivian daily.

They’ve announced this before that they’re doing network architecture improvements, which will be a cost reduction, but I imagine there will be efficiency benefits to this. And I’m also guessing they will have other improvements. Of course anytime you buy something high tech it’s outdated as soon as you get it but I’d still wait on the refresh.

As a first time EV owner of an R1S, I really enjoy driving this vehicle. It's a 7-passenger sports car.

When I ordered in 2021, the interest rates were low but the early production vehicles had issues. By the time I got mine (Dec 29th), interest rates were up, but my car has been great.

There's no perfect time, only lucky timing.

This community is truly amazing and will welcome you wherever you pull the trigger or even if you are an onlooker.

Hopefully this helps at least ease some of the concern.

Too early to say whether the updates are meaningful or not.

Since they’re changing the underlying tech architecture, I think there will eventually be a point where vehicles before the update stop being supported with software updates. This would still be multiple years out though.

I’d say to get one when you’re truly ready for a new car and don’t overthink it.

There will always be a new update around the corner. If you wait halfway through this year you’ll then start questioning whether you should wait for the NACS changeover.

If you wait for the NACS changeover, you’ll then question whether you should wait for whatever new tech they’re working on.

I’m normally a fan of holding onto vehicles for ~10 years, but the pace that EV’s are changing have me questioning that. The tech and capabilities are just changing so fast (by automotive standards). So just buy a new car when you’re ready for a new car. Don’t rush it, but don’t wait forever either.

I am in a similar situation. I am a reservations holder (R1S quad) for over 2.5+yrs and the nearest SC is 300mi away in Denver or CSPrings. Due to the distance I was one of last to be contacted by Rivain In mid Dec 2023 for purchase, but they cautioned me mobile service would be limited to me due to distance involved. I live in the "backcountry" of the San Juan Mtns of SW Colorado. I told Rivian I would perfer to wait until after the refresh. My reasoning is the refresh is expected to be internal architecture updates (according to Rivian) that according to a number of posts on this formum may reduce vampire drain and other internal design issues such as a small percentage of bricked R1S. Being a retired engineer and early adopter of EVs with experience with a 7+yr old MX and 5+ yr old M3 it seems the first iteration of the R1 platform have a few design and cost issues that Rivain would like to correct. Finally, being a stock holder as well I would certainly prefer Rivain sell me a vehicle that improves their negative margin per vehicle as the refresh is expected to provide.

Here is my thoughts, no major updates will happen until the actual launch of the R2 in 2026. It makes no sense to make major architecture changes unless it improves profitability, and we know they said margin will increase by 35% with the Q2 updates. They did not say anything about new features...

You could possibly have the introduction of a QMP but other than NACS I don't see them making any change of substance.

I think with the R2 announcement they will show 800v and LFP tech in the lower trim models. 800v will be applied to all cars and LFP will be the standard pack.

I'm of the same mindset, but also wouldn't mind a lease option in my state.

The only issue I'm wondering/worrying is if by waiting, are some of the cost savings shedding some of "over-engineering" that Rivian is known for. Because I too want to keep the Rivian for many many years.

There's also a 10% chance the only changes are a couple of trades of metal body panels for plastic and we've missed out on months of vehicle enjoyment. 😜

And potentially a less robust product.
