These pictures are from a mid december built 2023 R1T and 3/24/23 built R1S. Front subframe with welded components is from an R1T and the fully cast subframe is from a newer R1S.
So what you're saying is this, right?

Not necessarily good and bad, but new and old.
I agree with you... not good nor bad. I'm sure that part has gone through multiple revisions. Plus, most racecars probably share the construction method of the welded piece, over the cast piece.

Agree on cast vs. properly welded, but those welds are clearly hand welded, and pretty darn sloppy, which may or may not affect the integrity.

But does the Rivian with the welds have the plastic inserts in the back of the headrest or the wooden ones?

The structural integrity of the entire vehicle depends on it!

ive got a 19xxx VIN R1T, manufacture date of 2/23 and it has the cast subframe same as the photos OP posted. was a bit relieved to see that.
My 199xx R1T also in 2/23 has the newer cast LCA and revised spindle as well.

I have the older subframe and the truck is making a bad popping sound when I turn. Has anyone experienced any catastrophic failure of these welded joints?

Rivian replaced one of my dampers for popping during low speed turns and when going over thresholds.

Zero is the lowest speed it would pop at. I don't have sound on this computer for your video.
The subframe was Rivian's diagnosis, not mine. I initially thought it was a loose steering rack.

I took my R1T in for alignment issues. They ended up replacing the subframe and lower control arms. I had the welded subframe to start, and they replaced it with the welded version as well. VIN 14XXX

Mine must have just missed the change over … 1/23 build, mid-18000 VIN and welded
