HI there folks,

yesterday washing my R1T I found a crack in the windshield down in the bottom corner by the VIN number. The crack grew from a small impact point outward to both the bottom and side of the glass. So it will need replaced.

Anyone have experience with replacing a windshield? Here are my options.
  1. Have Rivian do the replacement. The camera/sensors would need to be calibrated too. They can't do this until Jan 4th. I setup an appointment, though I am hoping for a faster option
  2. Have RCCC (Rivian certified collision center) do the swap. There is one here in the Portland area. Sounds like they would take a few weeks to get to it. And they confirmed they can't do the recalibration and it would have to be sent to Rivian for that. though they would have that handled while they had it. Being that I can't get an appointment till Jan, I don't see how this is faster than having rivian replace it.
  3. Have safelite do the replacement. They can do this the fastest, like this weekend to maybe early next week. But they confirmed they can't do the recalibration for rivan and so I still need a rivian appointment. They make you acknowledge, like with a waiver, that since they can't recalibrate the safety systems, they might not work.

Has anyone tried #3? It is the fastest route and they are trusted in replacing glass. how much of an issue is it with the safety systems, camera, etc? I need to ask Rivian service but I am pretty sure recalibration can't be done with a mobile appointment.

I am leaning towards number #1 as I have to get them to recalibrate anyway and it will be done right. in the meantime I will seal the crack so it stays waterproof..

I’ve had 4 or 5 safelite windshields over the years including one for my model 3 which requires extra steps for driver assistance cameras etc. I’ve never had an issue.

I did Rivian. Was able to add it to an existing SC ticket. I've read stories were the certified collision center was more money. $2400 vs $1800. I dont think Safelite can calibrate sensors yet so you're still waiting on Rivian at that point.

I'm on windshield # 3 currently and luckily Safelite was able to patch the chip in the current one before it spread further. Rivian's replaced both times and they've been able to flex their schedule on both occasions due to the location of the crack(s), and the fact that it kept spreading so you might ask about that and see if they can accelerate the timeline.

I should add, that this is all from around town/highway driving getting small debris kicked up towards the window. Maybe its the angle of the window or the shape of the hood that pulls stuff toward the glass vs. up and over but I've never had to replace a windshield previously so twice in 18 months isn't great.

Rivian Service recommended I use the Rivian certified body shop to do my windshield replacement to get it done quicker than getting an appointment at the very busy Brooklyn NY Service Center. No deductible glass coverage is required in my state so cost wasn’t a factor. Replacement shield took a couple of weeks to get from Rivian to the certified shop. Replacement of the glass and calibration all done well by the certified shop. The shop’s technician had been trained by Rivian to do Rivian windshields. Insurance covered 100 percent of the $2500 bill.

You had safelite replace your windshield on a rivian? or previous vehicles? I don't mind safelite at all, but they can't calibrate the safety systems. So you have to follow up with a rivian appointment anyway. I am trying to see if anyone has done this and had issues between the glass replacement and then rivian recalibrating.

yeah rivian thought it would be faster with the local RCCC. But they did admit it isn't always. And when I did ask the RCCC, unlike your experience, this shop doesn't do re-calibrate. And it is the only shop in the portland area. So it ended up not being faster.

I'm guessing you've never owned a Jeep Wrangler. 😏

I had the windshield replaced a couple of months ago. Initially, Safelite indicated they could do the full job. Quickly, they corrected that and said that they could replace the glass but Rivian would have to do the recalibration. A week or so later I contacted Rivian and scheduled both the install and recalibration so I didn't have to deal with two appointments, and they were able to schedule me just few weeks out. Safelite coincidentally called me the same day to cancel my appointment, apologizing but said they couldn't even get the glass at that point. Fortunately, it didn't cost me a meaningful amount of rescheduling time and the crack was hard to see. But for anyone who hears that Safelite can do a replacement, push back and verify before scheduling.

Had mine replaced by Rivian in Oct. They expedited my appointment because the crack was near the top sensors and camera. Took 2 days (they wait for seal and test before recalibrating the sensors) they even gave me an R1S loaner, it was smooth and fast. I recommend just getting it done once and correctly on Jan 4th. I actually went to Safelite first but they wouldn’t repair because of the location and didn’t recommend replacing with them because they are not approved by Rivian for sensor calibrations.

Had to replace mine and did it at Rivian
Only glass out there at the time was Rivian OEM
None of the glass places could get it
So go with Rivian
Took 2 days- they want the adhesive to dry before any rattling

I had the service center do mine. They did a good job and I had a loaner for the couple days it took. That said, I had Safelite do a Subaru with an Eyesight ( Subaru EyeSight: Everything You Need To Know About The ADAS System (tomorrowstechnician.com) ) system once and had no problems with the fact that they couldn't do the Subaru calibration...

I would check into Carstar. They are a franchise and my nearest Carstar could replace the windshield and do the recalibration. My local one had awesome service.
