We are considering the R1S but it’s much larger than our current small suv. (We also have a reservation on a R2 but I imagine it will be two years before it’s in Canada). Anyone find their R1s is too large? There is just two of us but we bike, hike, camp etc

I've always found the only time I regret a vehicle's size is when it isn't big enough. Then again, I have two large dogs, which influenced my decision. You get used to driving a bigger vehicle sooner than you'd think, but you can't make a small car bigger.

Only thing I’ve regretted is not having a truck bed, but I have come from owning four previous vehicles that were trucks. Plenty of room and the R1S continues to impress me. Family went camping and we laughed at how much we could fit in it. I’d say that’s a great issue to have.

Stay adventurous. 🤙

I drive a T, but I have always driven smaller vehicles (traded in a Tacoma). I wouldn’t want or need a vehicle bigger than my T. I’m single and occasionally have 1 passenger or a dog or 2 in there with me. I think the T and S are very easy to drive and park even in tight spots.

That being said, I have seen the R2 in person and it is smaller if that is important to you.

The S can hold a lot of cargo if it is just the two of you so if you are DIY'rs you wont always need to bring a trailer (especially with the roof rack). That being said, if we didn't have 2 teens, 2 cats and a dog to cart to the cottage we would have had a Tesla Model 3 ages ago.

If you do not need interior space then there are better options out there I am sad to say.

Just my two cents.

I appreciate the response! I think the truck bed would be less practical for us, and it’s even longer. We drove both and they are both amazing though

Have you considered the R1T? I love all the secure storage with the frunk, gear tunnel, and truck bed with tonneau cover. The only real secure storage on the R1S is in the frunk. Plus, with the truck, it's easy to haul bikes and throw whatever you want into the bed of the truck. A RTT will fit on either one, but this wasn't feasible with my wife's mobility issues so we went with the truck bed route and have taken it all over the place in the past 18 months.

I like the size, we travel with 2 pups so really gives much more room than the Jeep GC we replaced.

My wife prefers something a little smaller, she is looking forward to the R2 we have reserved but does drive the R1S on occasion.

Thanks for the feedback. I much prefer the functional interior space of the Rivian to any of the teslas and the height for getting in and out. My current Honda element I drive with my back seats up mostly to keep the cargo space free. I really like the idea of the R2 but it seems this could be a long wait in Canada and many unknowns on price etc

Love the truck and think it’s even better looking. I don’t like that it’s even longer and i think the interior storage is better for my use. For example hauling our telescope. We also live inner city but drive to the mountains regularly.

We test drive the S initially but were surprised how big it was. Immediately switched to a T (even though it is bigger) and no regrets. (Disclaimer-kids grown and out of the house)

It’s funny - the s seems bigger than the t but the t is longer. If we got the s, we’d leave the the third row permanently down

Hi, we have an S and it’s just the two of us and our dog. The S definitely looks and feels larger than the T. We drove the T a few times as a service loaner and we could not get over how much smaller it seemed. Like you, our priority is to have functional interior space. We use it for our dog kennel, camping refrigerator/freezer and luggage that we don’t want exposed to the elements (computers, monitors, cosmetics, etc). The T was very impractical for us.

This is a tough question that I often struggle with. I've always loved driving small cars, and the R1S is way bigger than anything else I've ever owned.

I regret the R1S's size fairly often, like whenever I see a nice corner I could throw it into, parking or washing it, or looking at it's abysmal (for an EV) efficiency.

But I also often appreciate the capabilities that come with its size - occasional trips with 6 people, moving, dump trips, giving away or picking up furniture, towing, etc.

In short, it's a pretty standard size trade-off. And one that I'm willing to make, obviously, as I still have it. I had more fun driving smaller cars, but there were things I couldn't do with them that I can do with this.

I see you have a Tesla Roadster. I had one as my daily driver for 7 years and loved it, but I eventually had to get something bigger as it was difficult for my mother to get in and out and I needed to drive her around a bit. So there are trade-offs both ways. To my mind the best thing, if you can, is to have one big vehicle like the R1S and one small one like the Roadster, and take the appropriate one for each trip.

Our R1S promptly named itself: "Behemoth." We had to get used to the size.

When my brother-in-law died, Behemoth helped the family clear out his apartment more quickly.

We can usually haul, in one trip, all the supplies that our rural Food Bank needs -- even in the rain.

The sensors, cameras, and folding mirrors help us park safely -- and centered! -- in tight or irregular spaces.

I'm confident that if we camped, we'd be grateful for the ample interior space in the R1S.

***

Our current plan is to get an R2 as an affordable backup vehicle and for personal trips, probably without selling the R1S or R1T.

I'm glad we didn't wait for the R2 to get our first Rivian.

Very best wishes, @Capri!
