Hi, I prefer having the tent higher up so I'm planning on putting it over the cab instead of over the bed.
It's a Yakima sky rise hd (basically the same one as what's in the gear shop).
I don't have an easy way to get the tent on and off so I'd basically be leaving it there and driving with it there every day.

Drag aside, is there anything else that should be aware of but haven't considered?

Probably easier to open than when we put our tent on the roof of the R1S.

Be careful when trying to park it in your garage back at home, go through a drive through at a restaurant or other business, use a parking garage (some DC fast chargers are located in parking garages), etc..., but it should be fine. Most of the RTTs seem to have a long enough ladder to be able to mount on top of an SUV, so they should work fine on the roof of a R1T.

Just don’t look at the roof glass funny and you should be ok.

Defeats the purpose of R1T glass roof, at least 10% loss of range, parking structure and fast food drive through clearances, greater fall distance with increased risk of spinal cord and head injuries, snagging on tree branches. I still enjoy old fashioned sleeping on the earth's surface. Drive well.

You could put the tent on a raised bed rack.

Would that be better for the truck? I have the Yakima overhaul but it's not compatible with the R1T without mods that I can't do myself

I would not put it over the cab. I wanted my RTT up higher (for usable space in the bed), but not over the cab. My solution was an Xtrusion Overland bed rack, with the tent mounted above the bed. IMHO, there are a few key advantages to this setup versus over the cab. 1) It is easy to mount and remove. The mounting brackets are easily accessible from outside the bed. Have fun accessing mounting brackets when mounted above that fragile sunroof, without damaging the sunroof. I had this same tent mounted on my Toyota FJ with a low profile rack. It was a PITA to access the mounting brackets. Good thing that roof was metal 🤪 On my R1T, using some tie down/ratchet straps attached to rafter hooks, I do this myself, no problem. 2) Mounting over the cab is sure to create annoying wind noise. Mounting behind the cab over the bed, has resulted in no noise, in my case. 3) I have seen only minor efficiency impact with my setup, but YMMV. I don’t think that would be the case with something mounted much further forward and necessarily significantly higher above the cab.

For efficiency sake, my goal was to keep the tent as low as possible, while clearing the roof spoiler all the way up to the antenna fin. I did not want it up above that fin. That would have added at least 4” of additional height. My hardshell tent is about 78” long, much longer than most foldable tents, so it does stick out the back a wee bit, but no deal. I can mount my large frame E-MTB in the bed, under the rack, along with whatever other gear I have, and it is all very accessible.
