It’s been almost a year since I mailed in
amended return to get the $7500 rebate. IRS is taking unbelievably long. They are saying due to stolen identities and other security measures and just being IRS, it’s taking longer than expected. Why didn’t Rivian just make us apply for the rebate in the tax year that the vehicle was delivered vs having to amend 2022 taxes? It would have been much easier to ask for the EV rebate in 2023 or 2024 when the vehicle was delivered.

First, not a rebate, it's a credit. And the terms of that IRS tax credit changed on August 17 2022.

Rivian is doing you a huge favor by giving you a means to get the old credit, but you're free to get the current credit on your current taxes instead if you want - you'll just get a whole lot less.

To be clear, Rivian doesn't control anything about how you can claim a tax credit - your beef is 100% with the IRS.

Absolutely it is. IRS is never in urgency to give anything back. So are you saying if they would’ve given it in 2023 in 2024 off the price of the vehicle, the rules are less than $7500?

Amended returns are last to be processed. Relax it’s not a conspiracy by Rivian

Filed my amended return in June 2024. Still waiting. IRS says mine was sent to international office because of some foreign tax thing on my return.

I wonder if anyone else received their Amended 2022 refund yet?
Mine took 15 months.

October ‘23 all the way to December ’24 - it took so long I received $998 in interest in my payment (which qualifies as income, thanks IRS)

There are dozens of threads on this; have you searched?

If you applied in the year you bought it - you’d have received a whole $0 - so be thankful we signed the agreement and were able to apply for the amended return; as tax law changed Aug 15 ‘22 basically making Rivian not qualify due to cost.

The rules changed in 2022. If you want to get the pre-change rules, you had to use the "amended 2022" method. Under the newer rules, you would apply for the credit in the year you took delivery on that year's taxes, rather than the amended 2022.

But the newer credit has a lot more restrictions - the vehicle could have a maximum price of $80,000, your income couldn't be over… whatever the income limit is, and the maximum credit is less than the old-rules credit.

It was entirely your choice which to use. If you wanted the full credit, you had to use the "amended 2022" method, though. And if your vehicle sale price was over $80k, or your income over the income limit, then to get *ANY* credit you had to use the "amended 2022."

It took 15 months from when IRS received your amended tax return, or 15 months from when it was completed by IRS?

The tax rebate is not under Rivian’s control. The binding agreement takes advantage of the tax credit prior to the 2022 inflation reduction act which later imposed income and origin of production requirements on the tax credit moving toward. So be grateful Rivian even offered binding contracts to take advantage of the full $7500 credit on purchase (not lease) which most Rivian buyers would not qualify for due to income caps.

Ok show us how you don’t know tax rules without explicitly saying it. This isn’t under Rivian’s control. It’s not like they are paying the $7500 credit to the government to refund back to you. Not every customer can even get the full tax credit. Customers who didn’t pay $7500 in taxes can’t claim the full credit.

Leases are a different animal and fall under a different loophole.

Mine was received May 2024. It was completed Nov 2024. I guess it’s “only” been 9 months since received.

I feel your frustration. It took the IRS 18 months to review our amended return a few years ago. It’s not a quick process.

Suggest you review the many detailed suggestions discussed in this thread,
https://www.rivianforums.com/forum/...hase-agreement-2022-amended-tax-return.24446/
most of which has been provided by Mygrain and few others. The experience has been if you follow the specific references you have a much better chance of getting your 7500 credit plus interest. Note the interest is taxable. However all bets may be off in 2025 since Lord Elon was allowed to hack into the fed payment systems and any credits to non tesla vehicles may be rejected now.
