Alexa keeps saying I need to download or update Spotify before selecting songs through Alexa

I just got an R1S Gen 2 two weeks ago. I've had this issue from the beginning, and it is so frustrating. I'm sharing my experience trying to diagnose it. I never have any problems playing Spotify from the touchscreen control. Often, however, when I tell Alexa to play a song on Spotify, the response is that I need to download or update the Spotify app. If I (a) log out and then log back in to Spotify, (b) do an entertainment reset, (c) do a full reset, or (d) do a power cycle, it always fixes the problem - temporarily. The problem then consistently resurfaces, sometimes only minutes later. Rivian support does not have any additional recommendations, and Rivian is sending a service person to my home in November to try to diagnose. The Rivian support person with whom I spoke suspected that the issue is a software issue.

Meanwhile, I have attempted to self diagnose the problem. Within the iOS Alexa app, my Spotify account is associated with my Alexa account, and I have selected Spotify as my default music provider. I tried creating a separate Amazon account with a new email (in case my use of Alexa throughout my home somehow contributes to the error) and also created a separate Spotify account just for the Rivian and associated that one with Alexa (in case my use of Spotify throughout the day on other speakers or Sonos somehow contributes). These efforts did not change the error or affects its frequency.

I recently had my longest error free run of a day and a half after logging out of Apple Music and staying logged out. As soon as I logged back in to Apple Music, the Alexa/Spotify error returned. I was convinced that the problem was a software issue trigged when switching between Apple Music and Spotify.

I then tried controlling my music through siri. When controlling Spotify with siri, the song changes on Rivian's native app. When controlling Apple Music through siri, it plays on the Rivian through bluetooth. It appears that even if log out of Apple Music, if I controll Spotify through Alexa and then switchi to another source, even my phone's bluetooth, the error is triggered again - not 100% of the time, but often.

I think, for now, I will try to get used to controlling both Apple Music and Spotify through siri. This will allow me to maintain voice control through both apps, while still allowing me to enjoy Apple's lossless audio when it is safe for me to control the music by hand.

This has been very frustrating, and I'm curious if others are having the same issues.

Same exact issue here. I’m on 2024.35.0. Curious if anyone has a fix.

Any uodatey? They sent. Mobile tech who observed this exact behavior. We even did a media reset and it came back. They have me bringing the vehicle in (in December 🙄). I'm convinced it's the latest firmware. MYbe two firmware ago as it worked fine prior. I feel with no evidence of course this started around the time Apple Music was added.

I listen to Spotify including my own music. This is no small issue for me.

Tried all the same troubleshooting you did as well.

Same problem here! I will have to not mess with apple music for a while and see if that helps. I'm finding apple music is a fun party trick every now and again but will stick with Spotify as my daily driver.

Same issue here. No problems since updating to .39 but I haven't used it much yet.

Temporary solution is to log out of both Alexa and Spotify, then log back in to both. Should work temporarily, but the issue typically comes back.

TBD on .39 solving this or not.

No fix yet. It is definitely a software issue. To remedy, I bought an EV sports line screen when they were on sale for about $100. If you play any song on Spotify by pushing play on the Rivian screen to get it going, you can then use Apple CarPlay and Siri to control Spotify. The EV sports line screen also connects through the Bluetooth input, but you don’t need it when controlling Spotify this way. That is, if Spotify is your primary music source, the music quality using the Rivian app and Alexa on one hand or the EV sports line screen and Siri on the other is identical, in practice and on paper. You can also control Apple Music through Siri and CarPlay, but have to do it through the Bluetooth input on the Rivian. This Band-Aid at least allows safe voice control of all audio sources while driving. To enjoy Dolby audio, however, you still need to use the Rivian Apple Music app and control it through the touchscreen. I have not wanted to admit it to myself considering the money I dropped on premium audio, but Apple Music through Bluetooth sounds great, and I really don’t notice a difference between it and Dolby through the Apple Music app on the Rivian. Additionally, CarPlay through the EV sports line screen let me stream SiriusXM.

Having the same issue here. Tried deleting, re-downloading both Spotify and Alexa, linking and unliking Spotify in the Alexa app, and soft resetting the Rivian. No luck.

I've had this issue around the time the C+ trial started.

I'd say 40% of the time I get the msg that says I need to update Spotify to use it. Yes, it is annoying.

I have no issues once I manually start Spotify

Same here, typically had to do a media reset after any update to fix it but after this one nothing is fixing it. Logged out of both Spotify and Alexa, multiple media resets, no luck.

It's not the end of the world or anything but man it sure is annoying for my kids since they love yelling out songs to listen to and it's Christmas music time now. I guess the cold unforgiving sound of snow muffled silence will have to suffice for now.

Sometimes you have to update the Spotify app on your phone and then log in again

Hey siri seems to work pretty good with spotify in the car. I'll probably just use that now.

Original poster here. It seems like the issue has gotten better for me, although it is not completely resolved. It used to be that once I got the needs update message, I would always have to log out and then log back in or do an entertainment reset to fix the problem. Now, it usually just works. I am happy using Siri through the EV sports line CarPlay screen together with Alexa, and simply pushing play on anything in the Rivian Spotify app and then telling Siri to play something on Spotify works 100% of the time. So I do that when Alexa fails. I suspect it will be even more tolerable. Now that there is a native SiriusXM app, since that is my preferred music source when not listening to a specific song.
