@Donald Stanfield

You seem like you have a good enough sense of humor to appreciate these creations. I asked both Gemini and ChatGPT 4o to do the same thing:

"Create a digital art image of a Rivian enthusiast who is also a k-pop loving clown."

This was what each came up with, Gemini first and then ChatGPT 4o. (I am partial to the ChatGPT 4o image, but whichever you pick for your new profile picture here on the forum is good by me.)

Enjoy!

Who said AI can't be fun and doesn't have a place at Rivian?? Welcome to the board, Aidan!

Why not just license Waymo, which already has tenfold fewer accidents per mile than human drivers according to SwissRe, and focus sharply on achieving net profitability through volume vehicles like R2 and R3? The list of "me too" autonomy systems is likely to get huge soon. Rivian doesn't have any special advantage here. Don't get distracted.
I just read through this thread for the first time. As someone else said, there's a lot of misunderstanding and conjecture about what AI is, how it is or is not useful to Rivian and how Aiden Gomez fits in.

My role at our relatively small (~75 employees) engineering company has me wearing many hats, one of which is what would be called CTO in a big company. I've spent the past 3 to 4 months trying to figure out for our company where AI is already used succesfully (Edge AI such as vision systems, sensors, etc.) where we should be using it, and where it is headed. I've determined that our company needs to come up to speed on AI as a software and engineering toolbox, or get left behind. That's what Aiden will bring to Rivian. He's not going to be coding a transformer, developing a model or training an LLM. He's going to identify short, medium and long term goals for AI at Rivian - in the vehicle, yes, but also in product design, software development, factory floor operations, factory floor scheduling and efficiency analysis, and much more. He may recommend purchasing/licensing an existing tech, or develop it in house. Who knows?? That's the point - figure it out!!

AI is here to stay and is fundamentally changing engineering and technology. If a company such as Rivian does NOT have a comprehensive AI initiative, they will get left behind. Today's AI breakthroughs are tomorrow's everyday tools. It's as simple as that. Kudos to RJ and the board for recognizing that.

For those wondering why this is important, AI can be brought into the autonomous driving and highway assist to help the vehicle make better choices and predict what action to take with context clues around it. So many people complain about lack of FSD compared to Tesla and this can help. It can also help with supply chain efficiencies, service center efficiencies, and other things, but I do believe him joining is more for the autonomous driving Rivian promised to release next year.
Rivian will never lead in autonomous during. They don’t have the talent or the budget. The best they can do is partner with Waymo, Mobileye, or Volvo.

Also, Cohere is nothing special.

More distractions for Rivian.

Read post #49. If you mean own and dev everything in house I would likely agree.

But Rivian does not have to try do all the in house dev like Tesla is trying to do or Waymo. Lots of other options.
