NO amount of explaining to her and pointing at the screen inside could convince her. "The car is not even running, there cannot be A/C in there." She was so emotional that she simply could not hear that something was in place she did not understand.
Would have been fun to really confuse that old lady by showing her under the hood and then taking her for her first ride in an EV. She'd probably accuse the vehicle of being possessed.... 😆

Here are Az laws and Good Sam laws

In Arizona, it is illegal to leave an animal confined in a motor vehicle where physical injury or death is likely to result. This is a class 6 felony, and a first-time offender could face up to two years in prison. Additionally, good Samaritan law allows individuals to break into a vehicle to rescue a pet in immediate danger, with no civil liability if they follow specific guidelines, according to Arizona Humane Society.

Here's a more detailed breakdown:
  • Arizona law prohibits:
Confining an animal in a motor vehicle in a way that could reasonably be expected to threaten its health due to extreme heat or cold, says the Arizona Legislature.

  • Consequences:
If an animal is left in a car and injury or death is likely, the owner can be charged with a class 6 felony, according to Rideout Law Group.

  • Good Samaritan law:
If a person reasonably believes a pet is in imminent danger, they can break into the vehicle to rescue it without fear of civil liability, according to Lerner and Rowe Injury Attorneys. However, they must notify authorities before entering the vehicle and remain with the pet until help arrives.

    Exceptions:
Law enforcement, animal control, and firefighters are immune from liability for removing animals from vehicles, according to the Animal Legal & Historical Center.

Looks like if someone breaks into your car they have lots of leeway only requiring that they reasonably thought your pet was at risk.
The law actually requires that imminent danger is likely.

I think along with a sign I will put a thermometer on the window.

We have 3 standard poodles that go almost everywhere we go, that is one of the main reason we purchased the R1S.

Twice I have come out of Costco with notes posted on my windshield saying "Shame on me for leaving dogs in a hot car" another saying they are calling the police. In the past I had a Tesla Model Y and the Dog Mode screen was easier for people to see but not so with the Rivian.

So I designed a durable 3D printed colorful sign to solve the problem.
If anyone needs a pair let me know and I can mail them out with the suction cups.
$10 for the 2 plus $6 for the shipping. The R1S has been great for road trips with the dogs. 18K miles since purchasing last fall and mostly trouble free.

Will you post the STL on thingiverse.com?

Good idea. Now you just need to remix it as "DOGE mode" for CT owners.
Might as well put another sign right next to that one in the shape and markings of a bullseye reading "STRIKE HERE WITH ROCK".

Good luck putting thermometer at window and having it read inside temp. accurately. Nad enough as it is how fairly off temp. is on app at the middle seat area.

There are thermometers that sense temperature at a desired location and display it remotely. Some people clearly are not seeing the rivian screen pet mode display. The solution is to make the information more evident.

Currently travelling in my Tesla (free juice), here is v1.5 of my Pet Mode alert to those who might see my dogs in the back seat.

Windows and hatchback tinted maximum legal, windshield is not ( clear ceramic film only).
Still, my dogs largely hang out in back seat sleeping and are likely not seen. Regardless, and just in case. Nothing fancy, one sheet of paper, 2D printing, $0.00. Works great. Plenty of spares.

Great whatever works.
Drove a Model Y for 3 years, great car
but I really enjoy the Rivian more.
Safe travels.

Would not trade either of my Teslas for anything in the world. Short trip, 700 miles so far. Tesla FSD on my Model S is truly a godsend navigating through heavy traffic, in the big city, traffic jams, everywhere with methodical accuracy, all the while sitting back and watching not knowing what to do with my hands. My R1S is pretty good too, but it would come up so sorry short against what my Model S can do. Add stress from R1S to that. Reason why Rivian is sitting in my garage 6 months now. Plus free Tesla electricity on my Model S!

But yes, whatever works for anybody!

I went ahead and ordered these sun shades. A pair is around $25 with your personalized design.
