My kiddos backed the truck up into a tree (see attached photo).

Took it to the Rivian approved shop outside of Portland (Precision Body and Paint) they quoted me and eye popping $11,500 to fix it by cutting the side panel in half and replacing it.

I then called up TAPS (paint-less dent repair) and the gentleman, Todd, said he believes he can get it back to 85%-90% of shape and then I could likely have some filler put on and sanded to smooth it out before having it repainted.

This seems like a more economical way to go.

My question is, does anyone have a shop in or near Portland they'd recommend to have do this? I don't really wanna go back to Precision as I feel like because they're the "Rivian approved" shop, they just charge you double.

Thanks in advance for any recommendations.

I'm sorry that happened! Nothing's $11K is about right for the "real" repair from a Rivian approved shop. It's actually on the more conservative side; I would expect more like $15K. Even the non-approved shops will quote something similar.

I'm sorry, I'm not in Portland, so I can't give local recs. Good luck! It will all be OK in the end.

Do everything you can to avoid Precision. I’ll spare you the details here, but I had a scratched door and a small dent on the fender that went way over the quote and took almost 50 days to repair after I dropped off the truck…despite me paying the parts deposit up front and not giving them the truck until all the parts had allegedly arrived. It was a complete disaster with numerous lies - some of which were totally unnecessary - and they didn’t even complete the repair correctly. I had to take it back because they didn’t bother to test whether the window would roll back up after they replaced the door, so once I rolled it down, it was stuck halfway there. Then they broke the rear door handle and tried to hide it from being noticed, as well as doing a dog crap job sealing the door again. Eventually I just gave up and fixed it myself. Even then, it still went several thousand dollars over the estimate for what is surely one of the easier fixes out there - purely a minor cosmetic issue.

Seriously, Precision is about the last place I’d ever go again, but there was literally no where else in Oregon I could get the repair back in 2023.

Yikes, sorry to see that.

In Eugene Old Dominion just became Rivian certified. I know someone taking their R1S there next week to get a dent / scratch repaired, so could get a report on how it goes with them.

Holy crap mannnnnn! I'm so glad I didn't just say, "Okay" and push the green light on their estimate. I feel so handcuffed by the entire "Rivain certified" thing. But I feel like if it's body work like I need, it could be any shop that is reputable, which it would appear based on this story, they are not!
Dude, I'm so sorry. What a nightmare.

I'd 100% be willing to drive to Eugene. Let me know how it goes.

Spoke to an owner of an R1T with almost exactly that area and severity of damage. Owner followed insurance company’s requirements… first estimate at a non-Rivian-certified shop just for an initial estimate: $9K. Then made appointment at Rivian-certified shop. Initial estimate: $42K. Seriously. Final outcome (said took about 3 weeks): $33K. They cut the rear 1/4 out and replaced; replaced right rear taillight assembly; did tiny body work on tailgate and repainted all. I did see it after and to my eye it looked flawless. Owner was very pleased (although worried about the insurance hit that was probably coming). He said he saw it while work was underway… front right fender, both right doors, gear tunnel door, truck bed, rear window, and right rear 1/4 was removed. Said all that was required (per the shop) due largely to required high voltage wiring disconnects… and paint matching.

I can’t speak to any repair shops sadly. I will say that TAPS saved me(more accurate my insurance company thousands). I live out in The Dalles. My insurance asked that I get one of their approved shop for an estimate. Luckily they sent me to our local body shop(they have worked in past vehicles and I was always happy with work) they are not Rivian certified and I was quoted $13K. Which was essentially a new tailgate and matched paint. I tried a few PDR places that were recommended by other members. 3 out of 4 said they could not do it. TAPS was confident he could. It ended up being under $2K half went to TAPS the other half to the PPF business in same building as TAPS. My R1T came with the factory Stealth Satin/Matte wrap. They also did my front window tinting for $100 extra. My dent was not super bad, no paint damage(thanks ppf), but was in the middle of the tailgate(dented it dripping tail gate on my newly installed(too high) weight distribution hitch. 2 days before my scheduled repair, I slammed the tail gate shut and most of the dent popped out on its own.

I used Lucky Auto Body and Paint in Beaverton to do a fairly major repair on an Acura MDX. They did a great job. The shop was referred to us by Tonkin Acura on Canyon Rd.

It might be worth your time giving them a call or swinging by for an estimate.

Here is their contact info:

I had a terrible experience wit Precision. I had a minor dent in the rear quarter panel above the light. The quote was astronomical and they said 4 weeks even after they had all of the parts. Next time it will be pointless dent removal for me. They were arrogant and unwilling to tell me why a small repair would take so long.

We have used Aloha Auto Body several times with different cars and they have always done a professional job. I got that recommendation from someone in the business years ago.

I've had great service from Precision in Beaverton the 2 times I've taken my R1T there. Yes, their prices are high, but when the other person's insurance is paying, that doesn't matter to me.
Yes, it seems like it takes a while to get the repair completed. I'm not an auto body guy, so what seems like a long time might be realistic. I was fine driving a rental while my truck was being fixed.

The results were like nothing ever happened to the truck.

I was rear-ended while parked at the library. I'll be taking my R1T back to Precision to get repaired.

TAPS is a paintless dent repair place in PDX. I think it's a solo operation, with Todd the owner essentially doing it all. He's great! I used him for a small dent last year. He seems to really love working on Rivians and way more capable and confident with more horrendous dings than any other place I've found. Also much more affordable than taking to a body shop. Highly recommended.
