I'm so glad they fixed the cameras.

I caught a head on collision this fall, and I told the cops I would send it to them. When I pulled the footage, it was so bad, it really didn't help them that much.

Glad you're ok, and I hope USAA helps. I had to argue with them in the past. Also, WTF was she doing?!
Fix cams you mean upgraded? Or software? Would a 23 R1T #18700 have better cams?

My name is Mike, and I have a (car) problem
The Gen1 cameras are pretty low resolution, but they did save me once from an asshat claiming I hit him. The adjusters took one look at the footage, saw him pointing at me and staring while he accelerated into my wheel, and told me I was Scott-free.

Didn't hurt my truck at all, but mangled his bumper. A little karma.

OP.. sorry for you loss, especially hard to swallow because it was completely preventable. A 16yo driving solo is tricky enough, but add texting while driving and it's just a matter of time before she hit someone.

The only up side is that having clear recordings of the accident 100% removes the "he said/she said" BS that's always been part of claims back in the day.

If the body shop find frame damage, chances are once you add up the cost of repairing that with the other visible damage, the vehicle will be totaled.

I read that some insurance co's have time limits on how long they will wait for repair parts, once that time limit has expired without repair parts being delivered.. they total the vehicle even if the damage is minor. A salvage rebuilder posted that in the comments on a YT video when asked why some vehicles with very minor damage are totaled. You may want to inquire about that seeing how Rivian drags feet supplying parts.

1st gen cams are basically 720p resolution. 2nd gen are 4K. I recall seeing somewhere that it's the most number of 4K cameras available on any vehicle on the market. Also if memory serves, they wanted better cameras for 1st gen but were limited by Covid supply restrictions. ?

OP-glad everyone is safe. I wish there was a way to deactivate everything except phone calls for new drivers for the first few years. This is going to be a long slog. All the best.

That 16yo driver is now going to experience a taste of real life where your (stupid) choices have consequences. Someone's premium is going to be astronomical on next renewal o_O

I wish that were true. But, reality will probably be her parents picking up the tab.

Teenagers can be dopey and cars can be repaired/replaced. Glad nobody in Rivian was hurt. Hopefully 16 year old is ok. That accident looked pretty nasty on her end

Most likely true, but that's not without consequences in one form or another.

Has anyone looked at the possibility of upgrading the Gen 1 cameras to what would have been available if Covid hadn't limited the supply? If the processing hardware can handle the higher data needs, it should be straightforward to upgrade assuming the software would recognize the signal

Just spoke to my estimator Turns out there may be frame rail damage in rear which would mean an entire new frame. Which would mean the value of my Rivian would be slashed for resale.

I suppose I will go after her insurance for a replacement car or difference in lost value at least. Has anyone ever dealt with a situation like this?
Ouch, yes this happened to me. Sitting at a stop sign and got t-boned by a teen driver and his g/f.

Turns out the frame was bent after it sat at the repair shop for 2-months. They totaled the R1S and placed me in the R1 shop to grab a new one (beats the 4-year wait for the 1st one).

Not sure how old yours is from delivery date? Mine was about 4-5 months. My insurance paid everything, including the non-early adopter price, taxes etc.. Think they had fun going after the teen with state minimum insurance ;)

Hope USAA is in it for their customer's like my insurance was...

I'm really not the guy to be answering this, but I recall seeing a thread where someone bought a Gen 2 camera off ebay and was asking about sticking it in their Gen 1. Iirc the consensus in comments was that the older vehicle wouldn't be able to handle processing all the additional data.

Am sure if it's possible, someone will figure it out eventually. ?

The at fault always pays deductible because it's their insurance not yours. Hate how much these Rivians are to fix. Our insurance will go up for each accident a Rivian gets in. Hoping Scout actually cares about repairability. I'll be jumping ship if they succeed as a company

I'm glad you are okay and she is also. Good for you for going the ethical route and not feeding the injury attorneys with bogus injury allegations. Nice to know there are honest people left these days. Keep us posted as the claim developes. Looks like many are interested and our day may come too.
