This could be really profitable for them. They already have the quad motors, all they'd need to do is do some beefier tires from the factor, maybe code in a 1 inch lift into the air suspension, make all the skid plates standard and all that. Price it just above the Tri motor which means wider profit margins for them.

In other words, they already have all the ingredients in the kitchen, why not make something a little different that would make money? Look at how well F150 Raptors are STILL doing. Even the new Ram RHO has some demand to it, even with all the loud people shouting "IT DOESN'T HAVE A V8!!".

If Rivian touts itself as a "Lifestyle Adventure brand", it should make as lifestyle/adventure of a product as they can possibly make. Why do you think they even showed off the R3X to the public?
This is seriously missing the point.

Rivian isn’t making a profit on the vehicles currently built, and a limited run iteration does not make something more profitable, unless it is sold at a higher price, and…the market for $90K+ EVs is saturated and slowing. Cybertruck is the most famous in this sector and Tesla is dealing with a quickly building inventory.

Experimenting with new colors can refresh the appeal of the product without increasing the cost. Creating a derivative that would appeal to both the needs and the wallets of 100 people doesn’t help the company in 2025.

The goal for Rivian is to find ways to run out the clock until R2 is ready to go. Selling the RCV to customers other than Amazon is one way, especially if another large fleet buyer signs a contract. Keeping the R1 models coming off the line is another.

In the terminology of 1970s-era college basketball, Rivian is in a 4-corners offense right now.

I bought my first Rivian in December, and really was considering waiting for NACS native port, and then I read up in the forums to get educated, watched videos of how the adapter is working for a Rivian to plug into a Supercharger etc - and then decided to buy and not wait.

Not many buyers are doing this much research. Once news articles go out Rivian has native NACS, to the vast majority of public, that news will be interpreted as Rivian is now supported onTesla Superchargers - and there will be surely many new buyers.

Pennsylvania is #5 in population in the US - can we get a color named for an east coast town? Here are a few suggestions, all are real place names:

Blue Ball Blue
Intercourse Indigo
Virginville Violet
Red Bird In Hand
Big Beaver Brown
Lamp Post Grease Greige

I think once manufacturers start putting the native NACS port on their vehicles it is going to cause more confusion. Currently only about 1/2 of Superchargers support the NACS protocol. This will be the case until that old hardware Is swapped out and I have heard nothing about plans to do that.

Pretty regular occurrence on different EV subreddits where people complain their adapter doesn't work at their local Tesla station. I can't wait for "waiting for the native port" folks to find out as well.

I'm not missing the point, nor do I disagree with anything you're saying. Rivian does need to make a turn to profitability because that VW money won't last forever nor will their reserves so there has to be a change.

The R2 and the R3 will probably also have really thin profit margins that Rivian hopes to get back on Volume alone, but there's still the overall question mark that is the EV market as we go into this new government (in the US at least) that is very anti EV. So the R2 isn't a 3 pointer quite yet (to piggyback off your basketball analogy), but it's expected price point is a lot more enticing for those people who've been on edge.

And for sure, new colors can help refresh the image of the car to a lot of buyers who've been on the fence. When Tesla added that Silver color to their lineup last year a ton of people who were waiting for SOMETHING different made the move and now, in Seattle at least, I see at least 2 silver Model y's or 3's on the road every day.

But my idea is far from a longshot or a bad business model. Would it only apply to a small volume of buyers, sure when you compare it to the rest of the lineup, same way that an F150 Raptor only has a small percentage of F150 buyers. And absolutely another $100k+ electric vehicle in a market that seems overly saturated with them is not going to be a volume seller, but if you take some things that you already have that take up minimal developmental time overall, but can generate a lo† of buzz and maybe (juusstttt maybe) convince those diehard "petrol heads" to give up their gas off-roaders then it could be worth it. If nothing else, in the same way the R3X probably wont sell at the volume of the R2 or maybe even the standard R3, it will get people into the Rivian spaces and a true trained sales person can say "well, do you need all of these things? For $30k less you can get a dual motor R1S that has 80% of the capability but better range, let's test drive it and you can see just how capable the standard model is".

I also wish they sold the RCV to the public. A conversion camper van one of those with the long body would be amazing for off grid camping.

I’m glad you didn’t wait. Given the ease of both Rivian’s integration with the Supercharger network and the adapters, I look at my R1 as if it’s bilingual—it can attach to any CCS, but will adjust to Tesla net very easily.

Once the cars are NACS native, it might not be as easy to connect to the wider variety of CCS networks.

You will still be able to connect you would just need the opposite adapter (CCS1->NACS). At least until the other networks start widespread usage of the NACS cables.

It would actually be easier because with the adapter you can use any CCS1 station, no confusion as some will and some won’t work you have with the Current Tesla situation. Tesla really should clear up that confusion either by changing the look (color change would work) of the NACS pedestals or putting NACS compatible labels on them.
