Finished up the Atlantic Ocean Spur of the TAT yesterday, great trip.
Stopped and used the air compressor for the first time to air up a tire for a cyclist.
What a blast to be out driving fire roads and just hearing nature and the rocks under your tires. So easy to stop and listen without an engine to tell if someone is coming the other way before you head down narrow stretches.
If anyone is doing this trip or on the blue ridge near Montebello check out Sugar Tree Inn, great hotel, fun driveway. They had a J1772 (8kw) and a Tesla charger (9kw), no TVs or Internet which I liked but there is cell service, great hosts I'd definitely go back!
If anyone is thinking about doing it this should help ease the planning/range anxiety for you. Routes can be obtained from www.transamtrail.com unfortunately we can't upload GPX files to the trucks Navigation yet though so I'm using a Zumo XT and the paper maps for notes. I'll be leaving for Ripley, WV and taking the TAT to Salida, CO next month to see the first Rivian Adventure Network Charger, if there's info you're interested in me collecting along the way post it here and I'll decide if it's something I might track.
Atlantic Ocean Spur of the TAT Charging recommendations.
Nags Head, NC - Emporia, VA:
165 Miles needed to get to Walmart in Emporia, VA (2.7 mile detour from AOS TAT)
Rivian R1T All-Purpose Mode 21" Wheels: Used 52% Charge (64kW), Efficiency 2.6mi/kWh
There are 2 level 2 Rivian Chargers being built in Nags Head Wood Preserve, other than that you'll have to resort to hotels (Ramada Plaza had 2 chargers, the front desk was accommodating and let me charge without a room.)
Emporia, VA-Raphine, VA:
204 Miles Needed to get to Raphine, VA (Sugar Tree Inn 4.3 mile detour from AOS TAT)
Rivian R1T All-Purpose Mode 21" Wheels: Used 65% Charge (84.8kW), 2.49 mi/kWh
Walmart has Electrify America Stations.
Raphine, VA-Burnsville, VA:
157 Miles needed to get to another charger (107 Miles to get to Burnsville, VA)
Rivian R1T All-Purpose Mode 21" Wheels: Used 35% (43.7kW), 2.46mi/kWh
Quaker State with 50kWh Fast Chargers
Sugar Tree Inn (My personal recommendation for overnight) 1 J1772, 1 Tesla Destination Charger.
Steeles Tavern Manor has 1 J1772 and 1 Tesla Destination Charger.
Burnsville, VA:
There are no chargers here, you'll need 50 miles of range left. If heading north Staunton, VA has an EA Station. If heading South there is a Level 2 charger at Hampton Inn in Covington, VA.
