Does that mean the lowest tier battery that won't be out for a while or the mid-tier that will presumably be available at launch?

I'm going to guess the least desirable answer to that question is the correct one but it doesn't feel like "to start" if that's the case.

I'm also wondering how options-dependent a lot of the listed features are. The 3ft of water depth for instance. In one of the convention clips, one of the engineers mentions something about protective plating for the motors and the shocks being "an option." Doesn't the undercarriage need to be sealed up tight in the first place in order to submerge half the car under water?

In any case, if the bare bones wimpy range model is 69k and there will be a minimalist version of the longest range car for under 90k, best guess is that the middling bare bones version could be in Model S long-range territory which is probably pretty fair given the fancy features to range tradeoff but kinda bums me out nonetheless.

Yes, $69K is for the 105kw pack that will be produced after the 135 & 180.

This is just an estimate, not confirmed.

Base price:
105kw battery pack is $69,000.

69000/105=$657.14 per kw.

135kw battery pack could be $88,713.90

180kw battery pack could be $118,285.20.

I hope I'm wrong and way over actual price.

RJ has said that a 180KWh pack vehicle will be available for under $90K. So call that $89K. So that’s $20K for 75KWh additional battery capacity, so that’s $267 per KWh, so 135KWh model should start around $77K. It is also said that standard equipment will vary across the battery pack size configurations, so we’ll just have to wait and see.

That is one way to start a Saturday...Just asking...Why would you base the price per kWh off the total price of the vehicle and not the pack itself? Battery prices haven't been that high since 2013.

Doing some quick research, Bloomberg and other websites state that the cost per kWh is around $176/kWh. VW, in an article dated 10 Sep 2019, stated, "...the automaker pays less than $100 per kWh for its batteries, a landmark that has been cited as a possible inflection point that would allow for the mass adoption of electric vehicles." In that same article, Tesla stated that they were close to crossing the $100/kWh by the end of 2018, but no new information is stated on whether they have crossed it or not.

https://about.bnef.com/blog/behind-scenes-take-lithium-ion-battery-prices/ - Good battery price charts

Of course, all of this data is an average and depends on how complex those packs are and what the manufacturers are going to charge for them, but using the figure of $176/kWh the figures are:

105kWh = $18,480
135kWh = $23,760
180kWh = $31,680

Still some steep numbers but when you are dealing with packs that large that is to be expected. There is the possibility that Rivian has bought at scale enough to drive their prices closer to VW.

With the Tesla truck announcement on the 21st, hopefully, will see some new details about Rivian.

Thank you for the information on battery costs. I am looking for a pick up more utilitarian with the high mileage range. Something I could take a garden hose to on the inside of the vehicle and clean. I would like this vehicle to be more for work as a work pipeline construction on right of away‘s. North Dakota wintertime, Pennsylvania muddy winters California and Texas deserts, off-road washed out ravines. Not interested in luxury. I am interested in Durability and range.

It's funny like somebody interrupting a group at a party to say, "This is a stupid conversation."

mmm. Rolls. But... if you want to play with food, then waffles with ice cream and lots of toppings are more fun.
I was wondering if anyone was going to make a roll vs. role joke. I decided to let it slide, but admittedly chuckled when reading this @Mr_funnypuns .
